Prehensile-tailed Porcupine Joins Santa Barbara Zoo Family

Welcome, Miles!

There’s a very cute addition to the Santa Barbara Zoo family…his name is Miles and he is a porcupine with a curly tail and a squooshy nose.

Miles is 2 years old and came to Santa Barbara from the Charles Paddock Zoo in Atascadero, CA. He recently joined the three-banded armadillos in the habitat adjacent to Tropical Aviary and can be seen daily.

Zookeepers report that Miles is very personable and enjoys interacting with them. He prefers veggies over fruit in his daily diet, with foods like sweet potato, carrots, and jicama coming in as favorites.

Prehensile-tailed porcupines are nocturnal, so Miles may be sleeping when you visit – be sure to look carefully for him!

Special thanks to Miles’ Premier Foster Feeders, Jess & Aaron Goldberg
