Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce E. Dudley announced today that charges have been filed against Baltazar Mendoza Alvarez, a 26-year-old resident of Santa Maria, California. The complaint charges five felony counts: Kidnapping During a Carjacking, in violation of Penal Code section 209.5; Carjacking, in violation of Penal Code section 215; Robbery, in violation of Penal Code section 211; Leaving the Scene of an Accident, in violation of Vehicle Code section 20001 and Evading an Officer with Willful Disregard for Safety, in violation of Vehicle Code section 2800.2. The offenses are alleged to have taken place on April 30, 2017 across the counties of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo.
Arraignment is scheduled for May 12, 2017 in Santa Maria Superior Court, Department 9. Mr. Alvarez remains in custody with bail set at $1.1 million.
