At approximately 7:10 a.m. today, November 16, 2018, an adult female was walking northbound on the railroad tracks adjacent to the southbound Olive Mill Rd. off-ramp in Montecito when she was struck by a southbound Amtrak passenger train.

The engineer observed the woman on the tracks when the train came around a curve. The train’s horn and braking system were activated but the train did not stop in time and struck the decedent who received fatal injuries.

The Sheriff’s Coroner’s Office is in the process of positively identifying the decedent and will then notify next of kin. An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. An official cause and manner of death is pending toxicology and lab results.

  1. Who today still does not know they should not be walking along the RR tracks? RR tracks are also used as illegal drug trafficking routes with distribution buildings located next to the RR tracks. Police cannot easily patrol the tracks. So they become freeways for illegal activity.

  2. Using the route direction designation or the train direction designation to describe location of an event, in spite of map direction designation, is generally understood by the public. Who among us couldn’t figure out where the train hit the woman?

  3. Don’t be ridiculous…both Hwy 101 and the UP RR tracks run northbound and southbound. Do you understand that this means the end result of where they are going. IE where they are bound for… of course the geographical direction varies “along” this route. They don’t stop and calculate actual bearing of the road or tracks for every incident. The train was ” headed ESE at 93 degrees magnetic declination on the southbound track” is not really needed for this news release.

  4. PSTARSR …. you know don’t you that FACTOTUM gets his information the same way Don the Con does – from the likes of Lou Dobbs, Carlson Tucker, Sean Hannity and the 3 stooges on Fox & Friends (a fave in WH residence). He’s a true believer and would lay down his life for the Big Cheeto (or is it the orange cheatah).

  5. I was on this train and scheduled to arrive in Goleta at 5:50pm. This tragic incident took a total of four hours for police to arrive, amtrak admin drive up from LA, investigating, reporting, removal, pulling the video footage from the train, etc.
After leaving the Moorpark station, we traveled as far as Ventura whe. We stopped again. It was announced that a trespasser was on the tracks in fro t of the train. We were delayed another hour for local police to remove this individual from The tracks. And not without great effort. Amtrak staff announced this individual was running on top of the train and side to shade. It was pitch dark and we could see a few foot officers with flashlights and squad cars driving up and down beside the tracks with bright head lights on searching. Eventually the suspect was apprehended and driven away alive.
Tragic, and sad, holidays are hard for Many folks. This was a good reminder to me to be more aware of others less fortunate than I, that might be lonely or depressed. Who knows, possibly my encouraging words, smile and prayers could make a difference.
    Tips
Always bring snacks and water, medications, book, etc in case of lengthy delays
Remember traveling at holidays will likely have some type of delay.
Consider what alternatives you might have. Some passengers called alternate transportation Services to pick them up ( uber, Lyft, friends, etc).
