[On Saturday] I attended the public meeting at Casa de la Guerra to share my ideas about the revitalization of the Storke Placita as part of De la Guerra Revitalization. One of the issues regarding the revitalization project is parking. I have long noticed that the News-Press parking lot, adjacent to that of City Hall, is very underutilized. However, when I spoke with the person at the “Parking Table” yesterday I was told that the News-Press parking lot is private property and thus not available.

Could the News-Press make a generous donation of most of that parking lot to the City? Or sell it at a reasonable price? It is such a waste of very valuable space in the historic downtown. No one likes a parking lot. But one that is vastly underused is even worse.

for everyone critiquing a business for not "giving away" their property. that they use and pay for. open up your backyards, your driveways. practice what you preach. how many will do that? doubt any.

Thank you Wendy, for continuing our home delivery daily. No one else can pull that off. We appreciate this labor of love. The HewsPress is a civic benefit and the Sunday Voices section is every local resident's must read. Don't sell Wendy and the News Press short. Support it.

If Wendy can't make money with this possible proposition, then it won't happen. She's like somebody else who hangs out all he can at an uppity private club in Palm Becah.

Wendy's parking lot is a blight on the City! It is in total disrepair and not maintained at all. If she were a true citizen of SB, she might consider letting the City use it for prescribed hours for the Farmers' Market parking on Saturdays only. Perhaps she and the City could share the additional liability costs for those 4-5 hours/week.

Even when the New York Times owned the NP they may not have kept up the standards of the former paper but did nothing like what has been done in recent years. At least there were real journalists, like Melinda Burns, good writers who got fired or forced to quit by the current owner. The paper has really hit rock bottom.

I doubt SB Newspress would be interested. You have to be an employee to park there. They have hired a guard for years to keep parkers out of their parking lot. The current Farmers Market is supported be 3 parking lots and street parking. The De La Guerra parking situation will be much worse. I don't think there is enough parking room for the farmers trucks.

There are also 3 parking structures within easy walking distance to the proposed site. A block to a block and a half isn't too far is it?

You are kidding right? The News suppress was the only local news source during the terrible fires 10 years ago that made you pay to get critical information about the fires. She doesn’t care about Santa Barbara and really has ruined a wonderful newspaper. Thank god for the local sources like KEYT, the Independent, EdHat and others for being part of the community.

Sorry Flicka. The News-Press went south when it became the "New York News-Press". Local coverage was horrible and the slanted news coverage was in high gear.

Storke sold his paper 55 years ago but it's incredible downfall has happened only with the current ownership. I as said, the old boy must be rolling in his grave. Firing all the wonderful writers, and the best photographer ever at the NP, has been a terrible price to pay and only done by the current owner who should be ashamed.

I think a better arrangement would be to approach the News Press about renting a portion of the parking lot for usage on Saturdays at a reasonable rate. The News Press would win by getting some revenue for it, the farmers market would win by having a large area of parking for market visitors. A small section of spaces could be partitioned off for needed employee spaces and the bulk could be used for farmers market.

Paseo Nuevo still has 75 min free parking doesn't it? And it's only a block away from the proposed farmers' market site. No need to bother Wendy with civic mindedness or community kumbayas.

The garage off Ortega is right there too. But where will the “farmers” park?

I don’t think selling part of their parking lot would be possible. Not sure Santa Barbara code but a business is require 1 parking space for every 1,000 sq feet (or less). In the future if the sold to Amazon, Sonos or anyone else they would need all those spots back. What you might see is a temporary parking with a cash vendor like you’d see if downtown LA. That way news press gets to profit and hopefully enough to repave the lot.

The city planners are letting people build housing with no parking spaces, why not take the next step and relax the rules for businesses? I still say just let them do the market on State Street on Tuesdays and Saturdays. I'd even go to State St again for that.

Storke sold the News Press 55 years ago, and he died nearly 50 years ago. If you are progressive, please press the Fast Forward button and get with the times.

What REX and I hate is how far down the tubes the News-Press has gone. Tom Storke must be rolling in his grave, he was the Pulitzer Prize winning owner and editor.

Pulitzer shmulitzer... to the MAGA crowd journalists are the enemy of the people, or so they've been told and they certainly do as they are told.

If Wendy wasn't so hateful she wouldn't be so hated. Simple logic, really.

its "underutilized" during daylight hours but in the early evening and early morning it is VERY busy. Its private property in the end.

I agree with you REX, I don't think the current owner of the NP gives two hoots for our Santa Barbara community. We once had a daily paper we could all be proud of, no more.

You seriously think Wendy would give anything to the community? You're new here aren't you?
