Multiple vehicles were struck by a hit and run driver on Highway 101 northbound near Montecito Monday morning.

California Highway Patrol (CHP) received numerous reports around 8:00 a.m. for a Ford F250 truck striking vehicles on the freeway and attempting to leave the scene. The driver reportedly exited Highway 101 and got back on the freeway before leaving the truck and running on foot.

Witnesses who were working on a nearby construction project followed the suspect were able to detain them until CHP arrived.

Roger the Scanner Guy states there were minor injuries reported at the scene and there may have been ten vehicles damaged.

Scanner traffic also suggested the driver was intentionally crashing into other vehicles.

Hope that guy had some really good insurance! I have been in several accidents where drunk drivers were at fault and the results have differed wildly! In one I had a rental car the next day and they fixed my car very nicely, in another, I'm STILL waiting for my settlement. Stupid people driving under the influence. No matter HOW stiff the penalties they still do it. Ugh.

We drove by this yesterday at 8:20am and could not figure out what the heck happened. At least 10 cars completely destroyed from behind, all of them were at least a 1/4 mile apart, with no vehicle showing enough damage to the front to explain how it happened. This stretched from Carpinteria all the way through Montecito. Only 1 fire truck and 1 CHP on hand at the time, with several construction workers attempting to help motorists in distress.

"Witnesses who were working on a nearby construction project followed the suspect were able to detain them until CHP arrived." //////// "Them?" How many were there?

Sorry, Rex, "they" is now correct. Takes time to get used to, not ever going to roll off the tongue for sure.
Bird, I think it does take a plural verb. "They were driving erratically." That's just one person doing the erratic driving.

Rex, since the presently correct way to refer to someone whose gender is not known (or sometimes even when it is) is "they" not "he" or "she". That, of course, applies here, since "they" would be the subject of the clause and therefore the object, "were able to detain __" would be "them". Fwiw: I am not sure if the verb following "they", when "they" is one person, is single or plural: "They is..." does grate on at least my ears. ...end of grammar exposition. :)

I saw 3 cars that were rear ended with pretty significant damage on that stretch of the highway. the third was a totaled tesla, a news van was there covering it.
