Multiple Vehicle Collision at Arrellaga and Chapala

I live nearby. An SUV traveling too fast on Chapala nailed a sedan trying to cross Arrellaga. SUV hit a parked car causing a chain reaction and pancaked 4 total parked cars. PUT IN A 4 WAY STOP LIGHT NOW!

It is a miracle no one has been killed at this intersection. The frequency of accidents at it is INSANE, as anyone who lives/works nearby will attest. Traffic lights would be great but just a simple cheap stop sign on Chapala, making it a 3-way stop as Chapala is a one-way street, would have prevented almost all of the accidents that have happened at that intersection.

I agree. Arrellaga and De La Vina used to be the worst offender but now we have Chapala to deal with. It’s the freeway access. Close it and they will not come. Mission and Carillo are not far. Close Arrellaga!

Yep, there's a problem at that intersection. The traffic that comes up on Chapala after the green light at Arrellaga feels like a Hot Wheels track. There's enough footage on Chapala to close the northbound Arrellaga exit. The light times will have to be changed but we can do this!

I’ll tell you exactly how it happened. The little white car punched it over the intersection and the guy in the black SUV took out her front and slammed into 4 cars that were parked on Chapala.

That is indeed how it happened. There are two types of accidents at that intersection. The way this one happened, someone getting hit trying to cross Arrellaga because it is hard to see traffic coming up Chapala and traffic coming up Chapala going too fast. The other accidents have been from someone trying to make a left turn onto Arrellaga from the right lane of Chapala and getting hit from someone in the left lane on Chapala who is trying to continue going straight on Chapala. Those accidents are particularly scary as several times they have resulted in a car ending up off the roadway and up on the sidewalk. And there is a lot of pedestrian traffic on those sidewalks. Both issues could be fixed with a simple stop sign on Chapala. Better signage for the left turn to the 101 would help too so people would get into the left lane of Chapala to make that turn to the freeway but even without that signage and just a stop sign, at least they wouldn't be getting hit at 40mph when making the mistake of trying to make that turn from the right lane of Chapala. And I think a simple stop sign would be (should be) easier to make happen than trying to get the Arrellaga on ramp closed (which is an idea that I am not a fan of).

Another thing we need are street lights. I almost ran over a couple crossing the street during Halloween because they were wearing black clothes and I couldn’t see them. This is the downtown corridor! Forget about the stupid bike lane thing and make walking and motoring safe!

The light is definitely needed for the turning buses. The Arrellaga going to State crossing line should be a few feet back so that buses can turn. Every day you see cars have to backup to let buses turn.

But then the other on/ off ramps will get all the displaced traffic, plus the streets leading to the ramps will get more... I don’t see how getting rid of the Arrellaga ramp would really help, overall. Too much traffic, that’s the problem. Getting rid of on ramps isn’t going to get rid of the cars.

So, with this kind of accident do all those who were parked on the side and their cars totalled have any recourse against the the SUV driver to recover the value of their cars?

I live right at that intersection. I wasn't home but my wife and kids were. My kids are sometimes outside playing, but always have to worry about debris of accidents or even a car jumping the sidewalk in an accident. This accident took out 2 cars belonging to neighbors. Would have taken mine out if I was home. There is an accident there about once a month and a near accident about once a every hour. My wife wrote the city a few times about a light there, but no one cares.

Please do not "shade", UPS...
I have a family member working in a location, not a driver....she gets verbal abuse by customers, every day...those trucks, get your mail, packages, out much better than the post office is doing..
Not their fault they are going down those narrow streets...on the freeway at 5...sorry it is such an inconvenience...

The UPS trucks at Cantwells at 5pm are not that big of a pain in the ass at all. They are not taking up parking spots that residents would/could use for parking overnight. They don't block vision at an uncontrolled intersection. I think the little "hub" they create there is actually a helpful traffic "speed bump" to the 5pm Arrellaga flow.
Now, the FEDEX trucks that park at any and all times of day in the red zone of that right lane of Chapala approaching Arrellaga. Total vision block. Those are more than a pain in the ass.

I'm around the corner from where they park. They do take up spots (75 minutes or 15 minutes spots). Not trying to 'shade' them, but at the 5 o'clock hour, there are 4 just there on Arrellaga taking up space. The ones that aren't taking parking spots are often double parked creating a situation where traffic on Arrellaga becomes like a construction zone where one car from one direction can go at a time. It bottlenecks Arrellaga on both sides (trying to get on freeway, and those going to State). The street is too narrow to have so many of those large trucks there. Add in people picking up Cantwells on way home, hotel guests going out, and kids showing up for dance class, and it is unsafe. Just wish they chose a different location to hang out.

I don’t know about Roger, but people without cars ride buses, walk, ride with friends. They still use the roads and sidewalks, and have as much right to an opinion as you do, Jence.

A few weeks ago, my grandkids returned to school. Parental units allowed them to walk the few blocks back and forth. Lots of instructions about safety, etc. I waited for them at the one intersection where there is a 4 way stop. In the 10 minutes I waited, I think one car made a complete stop (3 seconds ). Every other car, and there were dozens of them, hardly stopped. One guy went right through. I was standing on the sidewalk and even having a potential pedestrian about to cross didn't slow down these drivers. All intersections close to our elementary schools need crosswalks. They need those flashing lights/control buttons. Drivers in Santa Barbara do not follow speed limits and obviously, stop signs are meaningless to the majority of drivers I observed. Very sad that parents might not let kids walk to/fro school because drivers refuse to follow rules of the road.
