Local fire crews rescued a man who fell approximately 60-70 feet in an abandoned water well on Wednesday afternoon.

At 3:11 p.m., Santa Barbara County firefighters responded to 2607 Puesta del Sol, north of the Natural History Museum, with city firefighters and the urban search and rescue team. Upon arrival they found an approximately 40-year-old man who only speaks Spanish that was trapped in the well.

According to SBC Fire Captain Dave Zaniboni, the man was standing on the well cover doing yard work when the cover broke. He does have injuries but is constantly talking to the firefighters.

Crews lowered a firefighter into the well where the victim was harnessed and brought above ground.

Within an hour, the 40-year-old man was successfully rescued by Santa Barbara County and Santa Barbara City firefighters from the abandoned well. The victim was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with moderate injuries.
