A friend of mine took photos following the Christmas Day wind and rainstorm. This one was of the iconic tree near the beach access at More Mesa. The winds took it down on Christmas night.

Its a Eucalyptus tree! They fall a lot! They have a very shallow root system. They are not native but our county has tons of them (from Australia).

At least it fell on to the land side.
And now it can be a bigger play toy for kids.
Or animals.
It may even live in new form.
If not , it should make a great bond fire when dried out.

Sorry ,but that tree looks pretty much toast.
The conversation would have been different if someone was hurt/killed by a DEAD tree falling.
Leave it where it is and now it can be used by 4 legged critters.

What is scoop on getting more trees in the ground for future wind and erosion control. Native or at least ecosystem compatible. And how far back is the right amount? Will anyone tend the trees while they are getting established? How many years is that? We have the good fortune of this open space along our coast. We could / should be planting the iconic scene for the next several generations - yes?

@KOHN, I care! But I'm happy this tree can now be habitat on the ground for wildlife, insects and the soil. You should care too.

Cares nothing about plant life, denies global warming ... perhaps he's never been outdoors.

Kohn1, I could explain but based on your comment it would be a waste of my time. Onward and upward.....

That's the cool thing about life, we each get to decide what to care about, and we all choose different things! How lucky we are. Happy new year, KOHN.
