  1. Of course I had to see where this was, per the most recent google view (Dec 2022) that thing was really leaning hard. It appears that it missed most of the house(not so much their side patio).

hope that link looks the same for all… & looking closely at that painted curb look out!

  2. They really are “widow makers” and are non-native.
They have only been here for 150 years, since they came from Australia for a losing reason.
    Railroad ties.
Except when the tried making ties out of them they would twist and became useless.
You couldn’t make a waterski out of them, that’s how much they suck.
They aren’t good for anything other than a threat in many ways.
    Oh, I didn’t mention Sap Suckers .
Yea, its a real bird whose jaw is glued together by the sap that comes out of that tree.
So they kill people and wildlife and people want to protect them?
    Seen “Idiocracy”?
What was the butterfly habitat before that?

  3. I really feel for trees, they are so abused …they can just run away. Many trees are topped made into what I call screaming trees. Others have there limbs hacked. Forced to live there days in confined concrete areas… Companies that don’t know what they are used because they are “cheap” and the trees really suffer…There has been no discussion on how these trees were managed prior to falling…ps I don’t know any tree that does not make a hard landing when they can no longer endure the abuse imposed on them….

  4. It is sad to see that the ‘Big Tree” is not named in some postings – ie “E-Tree” would
    be more PC.
Or most were planted to slow down the winds and protect crops or lemon groves
or avocado trees. The 101 Hwy even had them growing down the medium – which
prevented head on car collisons sometimes.
When you walk from Modoc Rd along A-Burro Creek, to the ocean on the City Park
maintenance road of old, there are dozens of fallen E-Trees. Most fall across the creek
from one side to the other side.
Others land in the creek and go down to the ocean or end up in the creek sides for a while.
And some of the condos along Calle Amigos and the A-Burro Creek are at risk from dozens of big old trees that lean toward the condos or patios and are within striking distance.
Wonder if it is an issue for the City or the HOA? or the home owners.
Maybe the occupants should spray paint the high risk trees. or call in a tree expert?
The last rains and winds fell a big E-Tree from west to east across the Burro Creek just north of the Valle Verde bridge.
And it becomes a bridge for the ants and animals. Lizards too.

  5. Chico summed this one up very well. SB will ultimately have to eliminate the Euc’s. We’re seeing this along the 101 day by day where all the trees are being taken down, and for good reason. They’re a danger and unnatural here. Add in the increased risk of fires due to unhoused people and that looks like the way forward.
Take a look at what SB area looked like at the historical photos back in the day (1800’s). Grassland and oaks. Sycamores along the creeks. That’s it. Edhat has provided some awesome images of what our place used to look like back then.
Hey Cito and Hope Ranch, we know you’ll resist, so you may have to fight your own fires and insurance battles in the future.
