The City is developing a new full-service multi-modal train station, next to the existing Amtrak platform on South La Patera Lane. By creating a full-service station, the City hopes to increase train ridership, improve connections to bus transit, accommodate transit service to/from the Santa Barbara Airport and UCSB and add new bicycle and pedestrian facilities. This project will also allow accommodation for future additional train storage, supporting increased commuter rail needs.

  1. Great story. Someone comes to town, has a family to support and no place to live, but gets a job first before deciding to stay. We need more resourceful, plucky stories like that. That is the story we expect anyone coming here to have.

  2. No busses come to the train platform, and it can be hard to even get a taxi. Not very close to Hollister ave, and no sidewalks to get there. Limited options for expanding parking. Could this station be relocated to up near Storke where there are sidewalks, and the tracks are within walking distance of shopping, hotels, major employers, and a number of bus lines? Relocation affords the opportunity to solve many of the problems with the current station. And new construction often affords better opportunities to improve things like parking, security, handicap access, and loading of bikes and bulky luggage. Relocation to Fairview affords similar opportunities but less available land.

  3. It’s such an isolated area that graffiti and other vandalism would be a problem for anything more elaborate than what’s already there. Relocation would be a better option, but it would have to be carefully thought out as whistle & other noise issues would be a difficult fit for a residential area. There’s also a litter and vagrant issue to consider.
