Santa Barbara County District Attorney John T. Savrnoch announced Monday that Gonzalo Gutierrez Cuevas, a 61-year old of Goleta, was extradited from Mexico on January 25, 2024 by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.

In March 2019, the Santa Barbara District Attorney’s Office filed a felony complaint charging Gonzalo Gutierrez Cuevas with eight violations of Penal Code section 288(a), including three counts of lewd acts upon Jane Doe 1, a child under 14 years old; three counts of lewd acts upon Jane Doe 2, a child under 14 years old; and two counts of lewd acts upon Jane Doe 3, a child under 14 years old.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputies received a report of Gutierrez Cuevas in 2019 indicating he had engaged in lewd acts with children in an apartment complex of the 5800 block of Nectarine Avenue. Gutierrez Cuevas was the Apartment Maintenance Technician for the apartments.

The alleged acts took place between January 1, 2014 and January 2, 2019. Gutierrez Cuevas fled the country after learning of the accusations.

The Santa Barbara District Attorney’s Office, US Marshals and Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office worked together to find, detain and extradite Gutierrez Cuevas.

On January 25, 2024, Gutierrez Cuevas was surrendered by Mexico and landed in the Unites States. He appeared on January 26, 2024, before Judge Thomas Adams in Department 6 of the Santa Barbara Superior Court. During this court appearance, bail was set at $1 million dollars. The arraignment was continued to January 30, 2024 at 8:30 a.m.
