Sunday morning at approximately 09:30 hours, the Santa Barbara City Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure Fire in the 1000 block of Las Alturas Road. The first engine company captain reported smoke and flames visible, and declared a “working fire”. A “working fire” declaration confirmed the need for the responding fire units to continue to the scene and requests additional units including the Hazardous Materials Unit and an additional fire engine.
The home involved was a two-story residential structure with a basement. The home was under construction with scaffolding around several locations. Access was difficult due to the limited egress and instability of the structure. The structure fire was fully involved with heavy fire throughout the home within minutes of firefighters arriving. Firefighters made a defensive attack, meaning they fought the fire from the exterior of the structure. The fire was reported under control at approximately 10:20 hours.
No one was home at the time of the incident, one firefighter sustained minor injury as a result of heat exhaustion. The firefighter was evaluated and treated at the scene and released back to duty. Santa Barbara City Fire Department responded five fire engines, one truck company one hazardous materials unit, a fire investigator and a Battalion Chief. Mutual aid was provided from Santa Barbara County Fire with an engine company. Montecito Fire Protection District sent a Battalion Chief to the scene and provided an engine company to help respond to emergencies within the City. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Smoke detectors save lives, even if no one is home the detector can alert neighbors. The Santa Barbara City Fire Department wants to remind everyone to always have an exit plan in case of emergencies. Your family should designate a safe place out of the home where all family members can regroup and confirm everyone is out of the home in case of a fire.

the reason we dont have enough skilled labor is because the skilled individuals are leaving california. Sadly this is a result, you wont find a surplus of skilled workers if you dont pay them enough to live. Especially how they are treated, the stigma of being a “construction” worker lends to all sorts of assumptions and borderline racist statements. I feel bad for the home owners here, as this will definitely slow down the progress.

Or the its could be due to the fact that over the last 3 decades our schools have stopped teaching and funding vocational skills in favor of offering daycare, ESL and and 6 figure administrative salaries.
