The Santa Barbara County Fire Department is requesting the public’s assistance in their investigation of a series of fires near the La Purisima Mission in Lompoc on December 6, 2023.

Around 4:00 p.m. crews received calls regarding multiple wildland fires that occurred in the State Park.

At the time Captain Scott Safechuck reported there were three separate fires ranging from 40 feet to 10 feet in size.

An air support helicopter was called in to assist ground crews and it took over an hour for the forward progress to be halted for all fires.

The County’s Fire Investigations Unit is actively investigating the cause of the fire and is now interested in anyone who may have information or was in the area.

“If you were in the vicinity of La Purisima Mission State Park on December 6 and witnessed any activities or circumstances that you believe could be related to the fires, your input could be invaluable to our investigation,” the fire department states.

Investigators are particularly interested in any photographs, videos, or firsthand observations that individuals may have captured during or around the time of the incident. Even seemingly minor details can be crucial in an investigation of this nature.
