On May 3, 2020, at approximately 1700 hours, a fatal traffic collision occurred on US-101 southbound, south of the Padaro Lane over-crossing.  A 2005 Infinity FX35 was being driven southbound on US-101 in the #2 lane at an undetermined speed when the Infinity drifted onto the right shoulder while traveling through a left curve in the roadway.

The driver and sole occupant (a 56-year-old man from Thousand Oaks) swerved to the left and across both traffic lanes, nearly striking the center median barrier.  The driver over-corrected back to the right causing him to lose control.  The Infinity spun out of control to the right and off the right shoulder of the road causing the Infinity to overturn across the Union Pacific railroad tracks, coming to rest near Padaro Lane.  While the vehicle was overturning, the driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle.  The driver was located by responding emergency personnel and transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The California Highway Patrol, Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Department, and American Medical Response responded to the collision.  The collision is still under investigation by the Santa Barbara Area of the California Highway Patrol and the use of alcohol and/or drugs by the driver is under investigation.

Anyone with information regarding this collision is requested to contact the California Highway Patrol, Santa Barbara Area, Monday-Friday, between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm., at (805) 967-1234.
