On July 12, 2019, at approximately 2131 hours, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) received a report of a collision that occurred in a parking lot in the 6700 block of Del Playa Drive in Isla Vista. The CHP responded to the scene and discovered a traffic collision had occurred between a 2006 Nissan Altima and a pedestrian. The motorist also collided with a building and several parked cars.

The initial investigation revealed the driver, operating a 2006 Nissan Altima, was stopped facing south in a parking lot in the 6700 block of Del Playa Dr. and the pedestrian was standing next to the vehicle near the open driver door. The motorist suddenly accelerated backward, striking the pedestrian with the open door, knocking her to the ground, and collided with three parked vehicles. The motorist stopped and accelerated forward, causing the front of the vehicle to strike the neighboring building which caused a rupture of the natural gas line and significant structural damage. The driver then accelerated backward, spinning around and striking a fourth parked vehicle. The motorist then fled the scene in the vehicle, which he abandoned in the 700 block of Camino Pescadero in Isla Vist, and fled in an unknown direction on foot.

As a result of the collision, the County of Santa Barbara Planning and Development Department building inspector red-tagged the structure which was hit as being unsafe for habitation due to the amount of damage. The pedestrian was treated at the scene by Sant Barbara County Fire Department and AMR ambulance personnel for her injuries.

The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office and UCSB Police responded to the scene to assist the Santa Barbara CHP. The name of the motorist [an 18-year-old male from Goleta] is being withheld pending further investigation. Alcohol is a possible factor in this collision.

**NOTE: This is a preliminary assessment as the investigation is still on-going.

  1. There are a number of comments about “how are these tenants (or landlords) getting away with this?” As far as I know there are not occupancy ordinances which apply. So it is the market which dictates the occupancy. Rents are high in IV due to close proximity to UCSB and wonderful beaches and beach trails, hence students need alot of roommates to afford the rent!

  2. One of the newer, built in 2008, 2 bedroom, 2 bath that’s seen the rent drop this month from ( by Zillow ) $4,700 to an affordable even 4 K. Kids might as well stay through the summer for a deal like that. With it’s 50′ setback from the cliffs definitely worth rebuilding.

  3. It sounds like this could have been much worse. So one minor injury is probably a lucky outcome from yet another senseless attack with a car. David Attias killed 5 with his Volvo in 2001 and Elliot Rodger struck 3 and killed 1 with his BMW in 2014. Maybe we should do a back-ground check for people to buy gasoline.

  4. His name was just released on the keyt newscast. Website not updated yet with his name. He is from LosAngeles living in Isla Vista. Curious why this is being buried. Another out of area SBCC student perhaps? Or not. Just curious about a pattern.

  5. Some years back there was a big deal about a homeowner above APS taking in renters to share the house. The big deal that made it quit was the fact there can only be so many “nonrelated” people living in a home. I think the homeowner lost the case.
