Update by Santa Barbara City Fire Depart
October 4, 2020

The Santa Barbara City Fire Department responded with Harbor Patrol, City Lifeguards, SB County Fire Water Rescue members, and Sheriff’s Air Support to a reported missing diver in the ocean off of the Coast Guard Lighthouse in the Mesa area of Santa Barbara.

Initial reports were for a single missing diver after two subjects had been lobster diving. The first diver to surface was unable to locate his diving partner. He then disconnected the boat from the anchor and attempting to locate his diving partner in the boat. The second diver surfaced and could not locate the boat. Due to foggy conditions and limited visibility, they were unable to locate each other.

Immediate recon began with Harbor Patrol, lifeguards and City Fire ocean rescue swimmers. The Sheriff’s ASU was able to locate the boat and diver.  After confirming identities and reuniting the divers,  all units returned to service.

Does anyone have any information about the supposed missing diver today between 1000 steps and Mesa Lane? There was a rescue helicopter and sheriffs patrolling the beach and coast guards in the water around 4pm this afternoon.
