At its regular meeting on February 1, 2022, the City Council will consider adopting a resolution that sets the time and date of a Public Hearing to consider the adoption of a Declaration of Public Nuisance arising from traffic impacts of the Chick-fil-A restaurant drive through at 3707 State Street. If the February 1 date-setting resolution is adopted, the Public Hearing will be scheduled for March 1, 2022.
Because the upcoming proposed action is only to consider setting the date for a Public Hearing, public comment at the February 1 meeting should be limited to that issue. The public will have the opportunity to comment and submit evidence on issues surrounding the Chick-fil-A drive-through and its impact on traffic at the proposed March 1, 2022 Public Hearing.
The City Council will meet at 2 p.m. February 1. City Council meetings are livestreamed at www.SantaBarbaraCA.gov/CAP or can be watched live in English and Spanish, on City TV, Channel 18.
C-F-A should lease part of the old Sears parking lot and have diners send in orders via app. Then have drones deliver the morsels. 🙂

All that needs to happen is to have the cops start writing tickets for people who line up on State St. Put up a sign: “No waiting in line on State St. $300 fine”. The problem would go away so fast.

Something needs to be done, we’ll see what comes out of it. I tend to agree w SB Dude that the cops (meter maid maybe?) should start writing tickets, but unfortunately they’re overwhelmed dealing with way more serious crimes in SB these days thanks to our city and state’s ridiculously liberal policies. The chick fil a people and a lot of their patrons don’t give a f—k, so something needs to change.

This never should have been approved. This was a failure on the part of the City not to do accurate traffic studies. Or were those studies buried?
The irony of this post is deafening.
They literally have a sign stating all this at the entrance everyone stops at. They get to stare at it!

FITZ – Back in the 80s this was a Burger King. Drive-thru was approved back then and “grandfathered” to C-F-A. Interesting that local architects Edwards & Pitman won some design award at the time.

FYI, staff has clearly presented the data of exactly when and how often cars queue up onto State Street. There is no enforcement of the laws as clearly posted with large signs at the entrance to the restaurant.
Now, what can YOU actually do to make a difference? Hint: Posting your opinion here is not it. Tuesday’s council meeting is to decide (or not) to proceed with a full-on presentation of the facts by staff, hear from the public (that’s when you can voice your gripes) and the restaurant owner, and then vote on whether to revoke the drive through permit.
3. If you believe this matter needs to be discussed further, THAT is what you need to convey to your city council member, NOW. You need to call or send an email by 5pm Monday, the sooner the better, or you can “zoom-appear” Tuesday 2pm-ish. Just take 5 minutes and write something brief. It’s easy.

Sail, I think you’re spot on! It boggles my mind that a business would risk signing a lease and committing to operate under the authority of Santa Barbara city. Why would anyone want to run a business in a city that is working overtime trying to turn itself into San Francisco? Prosperity beckons…outside the SB city limit line!
Thats the tricky thing.. we want businesses to be sucessful in SB, but just not TOO successful. There was no problem at Jordanos on DLV, but Traders Joes is a somehow a huge problem? And remember when huge groups of people where protesting BevMo from coming in, claiming the end of the world of traffic problems and impacts to the park? Huge dud, Bevmo never lived up to the impending disaster hype. Burger King had no prob, but people like their ChikFilA. Drive thru restrictions on that section of State a problem? No mention of Jack in the Box; literally only hundreds of feet away by the popular drive thru car wash?
CFA has created a demand for a whole lot of people. Maybe not you yourself, but for many/many people. They obviously have outgrown their current location on State St. A simple solution would be to provide free home delivery from CFA to anywhere from Bates Rd. in Carp to Winchester Canyon/El Capitan Ranch. For those that think ticketing will work, it won’t. The reason is that a high percentage of those “in line” for CFA are legitimately stuck in traffic as they didn’t know the “stay in the left lane from Hope until Las Positas” rule. The offending party who is actually in line for CFA only has to say to the officer “I’m stuck here!!” = no ticket. I think CFA overall has been a good citizen, and will open their Goleta site in the near future. When that happens, it will take some “heat” away from the current CFA.
Success does not allow a business a green light to impede traffic so more Santa Barbarans can clog their arteries similar to how the line of cars clogs state streets traffic flow. Traffic impediment affects everyone else on that road trying to get places. If they are so successful, they should relocate to a larger location like any good successful business would. Plenty of places in the county that could facilitate their needs!
Looking for the silver lining – if traffic at Chick-fil-a is our biggest problem, things aren’t so bad after all. We can deal with this one. Then, maybe talk about homelessness and crime and gangs, no?
When drive thru’s get permitted, the city is supposed to do traffic studies. Last one I saw, they said the average wait time for a drive thru is 3 minutes. Therein lies the problem. No way you can order and get your food at CF or In/out burger in that short a time. I still blame it on the planners/city staff and decision-makers who approved this mess. Re Trader Joes, moving into small places with inadequate parking spaces is part of their corporate model. Cheaper for them, horrendous for the neighbors. Ka-ching. Ka-ching. Money talks.
