A Buellton man arrested for attempting to kidnap a 2-year-old child from a grocery store has pled guilty to false imprisonment.

Earlier this month, 56-year-old William “Bill” Henderson pleaded guilty to an amended charge of false imprisonment by force or violence after the charge of kidnapping and cruelty to a child were dropped under a plea deal.

In August, Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Deputies responded to the Albertsons grocery store in Buellton to investigate a report of an incident involving a 2-year-old child. They later learned Henderson had removed a 2-year-old child from inside a shopping cart and started walking toward the exit.  The parent of the 2-year-old child stopped the suspect and the suspect released the child before leaving the store.

Henderson, the owner of a transportation business in the Santa Ynez Valley, was arrested a week later and pleaded not guilty to one felony count of false imprisonment by violence and one misdemeanor count of cruelty to a child in care or custody.

The plea agreement states Henderson will receive one year in county jail and five years of felony probation. He will be eligible for transportation to a residential treatment program after serving 270 days of his sentence. He will not be allowed to consume alcohol and must complete a 6-month outpatient treatment program.

The other charges will be dismissed.

Henderson will return to court on March 5 for sentencing.

Don't know why the kidnapping charge was dropped. You take a child against their will and walk away with them = kidnapping.

"Missed the last part in the Noozhawk article. At the time of his arrest, Henderson owned and operated a local transportation company, included among lists provided by Santa Ynez Valley visitor organizations. But the bus company website link now takes visitors to a hardcore porn website."

Guess he is trying to make money off the click-thru and his notoriety.

Between the Sheriff taking a week to arrest him and the DA sentencing him to a year in jail, I don't know which is more ridiculous. Maybe the judge figured the SBSO manages the jail so badly that a child predator like him has a good chance of being killed there, even in protective custody.

This guy has priors, according to a quick Google search. He was arrested for indecent exposure in Dec of 2018, then for spousal battery in November of last year, a few months after his arrest for attempting to abduct a toddler for god-knows-what . There's also a Noozhawk article covers most of this.

I'm not a criminology expert, but this feels like a pattern of escalation to me.

To summarize:
- indecent exposure
- attempted kidnapping of a little girl
- assaulting his wife

I want to know more about the Deputy DA Austin Ingall's decision that this guy will be fit to walk the streets a year from now. He tried to steal a little girl, for Christ's sake. Shouldn't he at least be on a registry?

This is a bad ending waiting to happen.

Someone PLEASE explain to me how this p.o.s. got a ONE YEAR sentence??!! People get more time for smoking a joint! This is the biggest crock of steaming injustice I have ever seen! This SUCKS. This guy should be locked up for a long, long, loooooong time! Ugh. WHO is in charge of this laughable sentence.
This is a total outrage. Glad I don't have kids!
