I have advocated here many times that Cuyama IS in Santa Barbara county but,has no 711's or much of anything.
Perfect place to dry out and clean up.

Best advice I’ve heard is to stop voting fir the same people that do nothing and watch our City/County suffer.
Don’t vote for any incumbent or any past council members. They’ve all been on the council for a good decade with no improvement to any of the important issues.

SBGETSALONG - now there is some constructive, and non concentration campish, advice. COASTWATCH has some plan to take action, perhaps by voting? Not sure. Bottom line, homelessness is not an easy issue.

There are two separate problems at play here. The first is how we manage fire hazards. Even if we eliminate the so called homeless problem, the fire hazard would remain. We have chosen not to address fire hazards in our community, so we will continue to live with a high fire risk with or without the “homeless”. The “homeless” problem is really a mental health and addiction crisis. The kindest description I have heard for our current approach to the problem is “compassionate neglect.” I would personally use much stronger language. Allowing addicts and the mentally ill to wither and die on our streets is harmful to them and harmful to the rest of our community. The solution is pretty simple, but we are unwilling to implement it. In 1955, there were nearly 560,000 mental hospital beds in this country, 337 beds per 100,000 population. Today we have about 38,000 beds, only about 12 per 100,000 population. In order to solve the problem, we need to get the addicted and mentally ill off the streets and provide them with the care and treatment they need. It’s the humane thing to do and it would clean up our streets. See this paper regarding the decline in psychiatric hospital beds.

@CHIP OFSB- Nice plan....but the ACLU will absolutely NOT allow forced rehab on vagrants and addicts. Therein lies the problem. New Cuyama would be an excellent location to build a tent city rehab camp- They could go to trade classes in the morning and rehab in the afternoon. Cereal for breakfast, hard boiled egg and an apple with a bologna sandwich for lunch and a bowl of soup a salad with protein for dinner.... You could spend a FRACTION of the 12 BILLION that Newsome is dedicating to "Homeless Inc" and deal with 100,000 of these addicts....but the ACLU....

Chip, it's an intersting point you bring up about the "fire hazards" and such, but those have been in place for decades, no change whatsoever.
The ONLY thing that has changed is the high numbers of out of area "houseless neighbors": being directed to come to this area.
I have documented proof that fires of this nature RARELY happened before the "houseless neighbors" showed up in large numbers. Once they did... FLAME ON!
Not to sound contrary, but your "fire hazards" narrative holds no heat. Just being truthful, not trying to be mean or anything.

Thanks Sac! I really appreciate that. You have given me a renewed sense of hope that we can finally all work together to help get the addicts and mentally ill the care they need and clean up our streets.

We need to enforce existing laws and arrest people who break them. With all the millions of dollars this state has thrown at the problem it has not improved. We could have built a facility like an honor farm for those who commit these crimes. Build an Illegal campfire -get arrested, use the street as a toilet- get arrested, repeatedly drunk in public- get arrested. Danger to yourself or others- get arrested. Going to a facility with mental health help and opportunities to get clean would be mandatory for 6 months or a year. Consistently arrest those law breakers. After a while SB won’t look so inviting.

What's happening with the old police station...could it be repurposed as a psychiatrics ward? Seems like we need an option other than in and out of jail for a decent number of our homeless...
