Body Found Below Shoreline Park

Update by the Santa Barbara Police Department

On November 4, 2021, around 11:00am, Santa Barbara Police Combined Communication Center received a report of a possible body washed ashore below the cliffs near lower Shoreline Park. A citizen had contacted a city groundskeeper, who reported the incident to a Park Ranger.

Santa Barbara Police, Harbor Patrol, and Fire Department responded to the scene. From the officers’ vantage point above, it appeared that the individual below was face down in the water. High tide made it difficult for rescuers to initially assess the medical status of the person in the water. Santa Barbara Fire Department rescue swimmers responded and were able to examine the person. It appears the subject had been deceased for several hours and was pronounced dead on the beach.

Santa Barbara Police, Fire Department, Harbor Patrol, and Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputy Coroners were eventually able to access the decedent’s body once the tide slightly receded. The body was relinquished to the Coroner’s Officer for examination. There are no obvious signs of foul play and cause of death is unknown at this time.

The decedent is a male in their late 60’s. This case is under investigation and the decedent’s name is being withheld pending family notification

Around 11am today, SB Police responded to the 1200 block of Shoreline Dr in Santa Barbara for a body found on the beach below the park. Additional rescue personnel, boats and swimmers, were called to assist due to the high tide as it sounds like the body was in the water.

  1. This is a strange and seemingly tragic incident. Not to take away from the substance of the story here, but the author’s wording in this sentence has me a bit perplexed: “The decedent is a male in their late 60’s.” Shouldn’t it be “The decedent is a male in ‘his’ late 60’s”?? There’s only one decedent, the term ‘their’ implies multiple. Or, is it that the use of the pronoun ‘his’ in referring to a singular male, has now become so politically incorrect that we must use incorrect grammar to avoid offending some portion of the population???
