Bluebirds of My Happiness

By Chuck Cagara

I was thrilled when a mated pair of Western Bluebirds (WEBLs,) that had successfully fledged a brood last July, returned to our yard last December and began flitting around their old nest box.

I immediately laid out my usual inducement – fresh meal worms!  It worked and they have been here ever since.

Theybegan nest building in earnest on March 9th!

The first egg was laid on Sunday, March 26th and the fifth and final on Thursday, March 30th.

The female is currently incubating the clutch while the male stands guard, delivers food and generally cheerleads and gives moral support.

Hatching should commence on or about April 12th or shortly thereafter.

They were delighted to pose for their respective portraits yesterday.
