Black Bear in Solvang
By an edhat reader
I found this guy eating what appeared to be acorns under a tree in Solvang. He did not seem to mind the attention and continued to feed ignoring a small crowd of human onlookers. I have never seen a black bear this calm around people, usually, I catch a glimpse of a bear’s hindquarters as it runs away. Is this normal behavior for a bear? Is this bear an adolescent or an adult?

Sep 25, 2020 01:07 AMLucky you. He is adorable and looks healthy. Nice to see wildlife that isn’t dying from poison, run over or shot. Hopefully he will be left alone to eat nuts and berries all day long...

Sep 25, 2020 08:02 AMnormal behavior to not run from people? no not normal. Eating acorns, and nuts. yes they do eat nuts/ berries etc. No matter how "adorable" they may look, they are strong animals ( wild animal) that can and will kill you if you are not careful.

Sep 25, 2020 01:52 PMPSTARSR: No, not really. A black bear is not automatically afraid of humans, especially if the human in question keeps their distance and doesn't move abruptly and startle the bear or act in a threatening way. Black bears have only killed 61 people across North America since 1900. That is a super low number when you take into consideration our population and sheer land mass size. Shockingly low. They aren't out to get you. Fear about wildlife is the number one thing that keeps humans doing stupid things like KILLING our wild neighbors. Do not spread fear, but seek to understand wildlife. Oh, and do lock up your trash and DON'T use rat poison. Ever.
