We woke up [Friday] morning to find that something had happened in our kitchen. We realized it was a bear, so I grabbed my shotgun for defense and scoured the house. We thought if he got in, that he was sleeping somewhere in the house. Finding no bear, we surveyed the damage.  The bear knocked over the coffee maker and several other items, but either he lost interest, or he was too big to fit into the window.

By the way, the window screen was not damaged. He knew to push it in on the edges. Also, our doors were open, so he could have walked right in through any one of the screen doors. The window is damaged, but otherwise, all. is well.

Bear Breaks-In to Local Home?

The tell tale signs of bear are the paw prints in the soil and the four indentations of the front claws. A photo of those goes a long way to giving this story credibility. The second tell tale sign is the dinner plate sized bear pile in the vicinity of the entry point. I have regular bear/home interaction experience in Mt. Shasta. The last thing I would ever want is one of them getting into my kitchen. They’ve only made it to the back patio but not yet into the kitchen through the screen door.

If there is a bear (or person) breaking into local homes, I'd think the location would be of utmost importance.

Probably a human (or Raccoon; they're pretty darn smart) trying to make it look like a bear. Sorry. Couldn't resist.

We're there bear claw prints in the dirt outside. How did you come to the assumption this was a bear. More details please.

Is this a joke? That looks more like a hungry homeless person or raccoon...

I've seen the aftermath of many black bear entries in Alaska. This does not look anything like those. Way too clean based on these photos. Bears will toss the entire house and break/rip everything. BTW, the worse part of an actual bear entry is that the bear craps everywhere. It's amazing.

Really clean for a bear they tend to be snotty so looks like a racoon maybe just bang to skillets together and don't try to shoot the bear you will make it mad and it will not die when you miss cause you were shaking good luck

Keep that shotgun handy because that bear will be back. If confronted, aim for the face/eyes.

I think a bear would be less scary than if it was a human. Whatever, glad you are safe.

Let this be a lesson: get a cartridge-type coffee machine and leave it loaded with a big cup nearby. Maybe leave a pint of half-and-half out too.
