Santa Barbara County bars, nightclubs, pubs, breweries and wineries should immediately close to the public under new guidance issued by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) on Tuesday. Restaurants and other food facilities offering on-site dining should immediately transition to only offering delivery or take-out service as part of the public health effort to slow the spread of coronavirus disease.  The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department is urging local bars nightclubs, pubs, breweries, and wineries to comply with this request immediately and to cancel any planned St. Patrick’s Day celebrations or events.

The goal of the guidance is to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in communities. Bars, nightclubs, restaurants, and other food facilities are locations where people from many parts of the community gather, increasing the chances of transmitting the virus that causes coronavirus disease. While many bars, nightclubs and pubs traditionally hold events for St. Patrick’s Day, these are particularly dangerous at this point in the coronavirus pandemic, as they could result in widespread transmission of the disease in Santa Barbara County.

Grocery stores, markets and activities such Foodbank distribution sites are not being asked to close at this time as they provide critical services to the community. CDPH has provided social distancing guidance for these operations, such as ensuring at least 6 feet of space between groups of unrelated people while shopping or standing in line.

For more information or the complete guidance issued by CDPH, click here.

The wording is "should" and is not legally enforceable, the police will not be enforcing this. Since these entities clearly do not care about the raw facts and recommendations from agencies that know better, public shaming goes a long way, for both businesses and individuals. TELL the businesses that are open and ignoring distancing recommendations how you feel. TELL the people in your lives who choose to dine out and attend other gatherings how disappointed and ashamed you are in them. Put your money where your mouth is: if you are ordering takeout, REFUSE to order from restaurants who have not closed their doors to dine-in customers - and tell them that!

there is no mandate (yet) didnt you read the article? "should" is a strong suggestion. But if it became reality as a mandate.. they hold the authority and can revoke their permit to operate., which maybe not shut them down now, but will prevent them from ever opening

^^ this is some seriously red-coat commie stuff here.
"bad actors" indeed... but it ain't the people trying to make a living.

the sheer volume of people "being let go" from the service industry will lead to riots that will be far more damaging than this "virus" is showing itself to be.

"Red coat commie stuff", get over yourself. I own my own business. My income just went to zero because my clients need to be able to travel and now can't so all work is frozen. Guess what, the longer selfish and greedy people stay open, the longer they will spread the disease because they can't understand that doing so will extend the trajectory of this entire event and its economic impact on everyone--me, you, and them. We all get to take a hit, and if people do the right thing, then it will all be over a lot sooner. This is a small town. If people want to destroy their long term reputations for short term gain, then I not only have little sympathy for them, but I will be working to accelerate the destruction of their reputations by honesty reporting on their actions. I don't have any work, so I will have a lot of time to do this.

The redcoats were British soldiers, who were not communists. This is a time when credibility is very important. People who talk about "red-coat commie" and "special spray" have none, and should be dismissed and ignored.

ALEX BLUE as from prior comments I know you are what I call a "leftie" but I have to say I 100% agree with you on this. People are so short sighted these days and have no ability to deal with things. If we deal with this NOW by sacrificing a little bit NOW we will prevent more pain LATER. Please understand this people. Why is the Farmer's Market even open today!!!

if you think your shame game is going to make this "event" go one second faster..... oh boy..

the long haul is happening no matter what. how could they possibly let everything go back to normal unless they tested everyone. which they're nowhere near being able to do.

why do you think COVID is worth shutting down society over?
is everyone suddenly no longer able to handle the mortality of earth?
TB still exists, are we going to crash the whole system until that is cured as well?

divide the death rate by 10, cause it's already everywhere ;)

Okay, Xantus, I get it. You are a do nothing, help no one, it's all about me type of person.

And yet you want to bitch and moan online about other people stepping up.

Some self reflection would be good for you. Why so selfish?

4:39, I'm sure you'd think I'm left wing. I believe strongly in individual responsibility which includes thinking as much about others as you do about yourself and stepping up to be a responsible member of the community when people are at risk.

I consider those to be core left wing beliefs...maybe you're more left wing than you realize :)

i'm merely making an observation that.. in this current climate of the world.. one where the media has been full on hyping everything that happens for the last many years... where social polarization has been pushed so hard and so constantly... where multiculturalism has all these people pretending to be nice to eachother..... that when a "SHTF" situation happens... there WILL be completely divergent responses, simply because a great many people don't trust the media or the govt anymore (and no thats not just "trump voters")

so it's a pipe dream to think there will be anything even approaching 100% compliance with overarching societal values.
but you can think you're scoring points by shaming people who don't think like you've been told to.

One of the more agreeable opinions I've heard lately is that efforts to "flatten the curve" will also help our economy in the long run. So even if it seems like we're taking actions now that hurt the economy (i.e. distancing, closing of businesses, preventing people from going to work as in the bay area, etc.) if we don't do these things, we'll end up with even more suffering *AND* an even worse economy.

Get over it Mar 17, 2020 06:29 PM
Bars to Close Immediately, Restaurants for Takeout Only

"Flattening the curve" will help our hospitals not be inundated with cases. They will hopefully be able to treat everyone. For that, this will last much longer as it spreads slower. The opinion that everyone stays home and doesn't go to work is ignorant. In certain close environments, yes. Everyone else needs to provide for their families! Of course, be diligent, but we're not all able to sit home and wait this out.

Makes sense to flatten the curve but it should (again, that word) apply to all food distributions, not just TJ, Ralphs, etc. Take a look at the gatherings of people by the former church on Mason/Voluntario for the free food: all close together, including the people handing out the food; then, the recipients sit close to each other, maybe a foot of distance. Maybe public shaming will help --- maybe not. Probably the Wednesday distribution by the Franklin Center is better managed but there may still be a problem there.

My friend just stopped by from his trip downtown. He reports that the Farmers Market is packed with people, all of whom are acting like there's nothing out of the ordinary happening. My 86-year-old pal informed me today that this is all "mass hysteria." Ralphs Fresh Fare (Carrillo & Chapala), as of this morning (3/17/20) is restricting entry to 50 shoppers at a time. I look at the Johns Hopkins Covid-19 tracker site online: nearly 200,000 infected with this Corona virus, worldwide and verging on 8,000 confirmed dead. Then I read through emails from my hotel-owning mates in Indonesia and Thailand and conclude: "Hmm. Best to stay home for now----and for as long as it takes." As one commenter stated: "Not everyone can stay home." This is true. But no one needs to be half-witted or foolhardy about this pandemic, either.

Infuriating !!! Our cases doubled from 1 to 2 with 96 test results pending. This town needs to wake up. Go to where the hockey puck is going. Come on. I'm talking to the ones who jammed the markets today. It will be here and we will feel it.

our cases? the one in santa maria? one in orcutt? one in ventura?

https://www.noozhawk.com/article/santa_barbara_not_candidate_for_shelter_in_place_says_medical_official

zero people with symptoms severe enough to be hospitalized have shown up at cottage.

but sure keep thinking it's a "pandemic"

meanwhile the most common conversation i've overheard in the last two days in my rounds through town is "i've lost my job and I dont know what i'm going to do"

Xantus, wow, you really should educate yourself. Yes, pandemics start out small--and they spread over time if you can't or don't quarantine infected people. How do you not understand that we are at the start of this and that it doesn't progress in a level fashion, it either skyrockets or gets flattened out by people taking the appropriate actions. Look at the graphs comparing infection rates in Singapore and Iran and maybe you will understand a little bit better how this works. If we stick our heads in the sand, like you are doing, then the infection rate blasts off and instead of a four month shutdown, it will go on a lot longer and you and your friends will be homeless in a year. No kidding, that's the kind of scenario that the experts are predicting. That's my last comment for you--good luck.

I started my 12 round trip to SF today at Peets at 6:30am which had started the take out only policy. When I hit Santa Clara county both my phones blasted an emergency alert that I entered the Shelter in Place zone. At TJs in Morgan Hill they were limiting people in the store, allowing new people in only after someone left. In SF there were lots of people milling about outside not keeping any of the social distancing boundaries. At In-N-Out in Atascadero it was take out only.

I swung home via the Mission Rose Garden, and lots of people were NOT maintaining proper social distancing boundaries while playing games on the grass. I hate to sound like a grinch, but people need to start distancing themselves properly now or else they’re going to be at triage tents in front of Cottage in a couple weeks.

Is this something the Downtown Organization should step up for? Aren’t they the voice of downtown merchants: shops and restaurants and hotels? Or is everyone making up their own guidelines? Not sure whose in charge there?

An article from a mom in Italy basically said that because they neglected to force their kids to stay in the house, the all brought the virus back to their families. That’s what I thought about when I passed by the Rose Garden today. To quote Trump in today’s press conference: Learn to enjoy your living room. It’s going to be tough, but it will be the only way to prevent Santa Barbara from turning into Milan.

Me too JQB. On a related note, the CDC released this today ..... https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/new-coronavirus-stable-hours-surfaces ..... Detectable in aerosols for up to three hours, up to four hours on copper, up to 24 hours on cardboard, up to two to three days on plastic and stainless steel. Might be good idea to quarantine all packages before bringing them into house or kitchen.

Be sure to read the other article on Edhat tonight, with a time of 8:07. According to the City of S.B., the closures SHALL occur. Restaurants SHALL only offer takeout and bars, breweries, wineries, gyms, etc. SHALL close.

I might take matters into my own hands and put up signs to practice social distancing signs at the Rose Garden later today. A couple groups were playing that game where you bounce the ball on the little trampoline which guarantees that 100% of the participants share germs.

please tell me they were all from one family? I had to explain to my 7 yo as we went to the park to play 2 square that "no, you cannot play on the playground with your friend from school who happens to be there".
