Update by Santa Barbara City Fire Department

Today, at Approximately 11:12 hours, the Santa Barbara City Fire Department’s Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) equipment was dispatched for a possible aircraft into a building. Upon arrival, crews discovered that a 1976 Cessna 172 had crashed into a security gate, just south of the Main airport terminal building. Although there was significant damage to the aircraft, there was no fire, no spilled fuel and the pilot was uninjured.

The pilot reported being blown off course while landing on Runway 15R and when he attempted to correct, was immediately thrust off the runway, coming to rest after striking the large gate attached to the baggage handling area. It is very fortunate that there was no airliner parked near the accident site. The pilot was confirmed to not be injured. The aircraft was secured and was subsequently moved to a service area.

The ARFF Apparatus were strategically positioned to dispense foam if needed. Then the crews examined the aircraft for fuel leaks, disconnected the battery and evaluated the pilot for injuries. We stayed on scene until the aircraft was safely towed and then returned to service.

There’s some type of airplane emergency at the Santa Barbara Airport, around 11:15am today. It appears that it crashed or rolled into a fence. Does anyone have more information?
