Santa Barbara County firefighters are working to contain a 13.6-acre brush fire near Highway 1 that sparked Thursday afternoon.

At 12:45 p.m. fire crews responded to the area near Jalama Road and found a large column of smoke. Crews had trouble accessing the fire due to the remote location. Once they gained access the fire was determined to be in the 3800 block of San Julian Road.

Named the Coast Fire, crews had help with air tankers as it was burning in heavy fuel. Firefighters were confident they would be able to get a line around the fire by 9:00 p.m. on Thursday.

There were reports of power lines down in the area, but the cause has yet to be determined.
