  1. Sigh…must we go over this yet again, BASICINFO? “Defund the police” would change nothing about response to CRIME. Defund the police is about ensuring the right people are doing the right jobs: police respond to crimes, not medical emergencies, not mental health crises. Just crimes. And the excessive funding to police to poorly “train” police in responding to these non-crime emergencies should be reallocated to professionals who spend YEARS educating themselves and training to respond to non-criminal crises. Defunding the police does not in any way, shape, or form mean abolish the police. I will give you this – the slogan needs work, because people like you have a knee-jerk reaction that is based on uninformed fallacy.

  2. The Santa Barbara Police are not poorly trained I believe they are required now to train more than other departments and have been for some time. I have known people who have taken the tests to get in and they told me there are different requirements to get into the SBPD than other departments and that was many years ago..They are not poorly trained.

  3. BASIC – stop. You say this at least once a week and every time you have the slogan explained to you. Why do you insist on playing ignorant? It’s something you repubs do a lot on social media. You say something simple, knowing it is complex (eg, “All Lives Matter,” etc) and then feign surprise when people explain it to you…again. The jig is up bud, we all know you know the meaning. Try pretending to be informed, it’s much more admirable.

  4. All this crap about defund the police as a bogey man because the police caught an aggravated thief? So we don’t want better intervention when the police, trained to take down criminals, encounter a mentally disturbed person or have to negotiate with a suicidal one? This is not a 2 plus 2 equation. We have learned that medically competent paramedics are a better solution in some case than a cop. We know t hat a cop is a better solution in other situations. Let’s just do the right thing.

  5. That being said… it is a dumb slogan! Once you actually break down what people want… it’s actually more funding to police! Just that that money goes to additionally trained and specialty equipped staff/responders.

  6. I’m so annoyed we have to keep explaining this. “Defund the Police” means divert some of the millions that police get for new bearcats and other toys to non-police social workers and mental health workers to respond to non-criminal events that police are forced to respond to now. That’s it. Please stop asking, or maybe next time, google it yourself instead of making another ignorant comment.

  7. Look what happened in Nashville the other day a Mad Suicide Bomber blew himself up in an RV If anything our police should be fully Funded to deal with this sort of thing…If we Defunded the R.V.’s we might have more money for the police to buy more vehicles and robots for the Bomb Squad it’s going to be needed..

  8. Nice to see everyone coming to the defense of a $7,000,000,000 company.
Restaurants have to close while your governor goes out to dine and his company gets $3,000,000 in PPE loans.
Salons have to close while your speaker of the house gets her hair done.
You’re discouraged from supporting small businesses while Amazon almost doubles in value to $1,650,000,000,000 in the past year.
Fascism is coming and couldn’t be welcomed by a more deserving group of people.

  9. I think you are making a judge mental statement based on something you have no knowledge about Buy a police scanner and the next time you hear a suicidal or at risk person call listen to that call, listen to it good. It is the police in this town that talk most people down who are suicidal/homicidal and they do it in a gentle manner. Most subjects who are armed with weapons are taken down with less lethal not with loaded firearms.. Just don’t blab out Defund the Police when you don’t know what your talking about…

  10. No, we get it. That’s defunding law enforcement. Exactly your slogan. And many of us don’t like that idea. We need police out there enforcing laws, investigating crimes, and locking up criminals. I’m glad you made your cause clear. Siphoning off their funding simply means less of all that, and we’re already experiencing more than enough crime.
So yes, we agree with what the slogan means. I’m glad that’s all cleared up!

  11. This is actually extremely sad that ppl are so desperate they are stealing groceries. We need to allow businesses to work outdoor, so people can have jobs to feed their families again. There is no science backing up these small business closures. If it was some have been shut in purple tier for 6 weeks and cases are still exploding. Enforce no at home gathering.

  12. *that autocorrected poorly!
The slogan doesn’t need work, it’s the complete Opposite of what you are Saying/demanding! (Which is: Massive additional funding to police/emergency responders so that they can more completely, safely and intelligently deal with any/all situations they encounter).
So I think The phrase you are actually advocating for (when you actually step back and look at what you are saying with your additional staff and training) is “MASSIVELY INCREASE POLICE FUNDING!”

  13. I’m a Demonrat and I do not believe in Defunding the Police either..People say “Defund the Police” and then they need the police. Why not call a social worker the next time you need a cop? If you are for Defunding the Police…Why are people called names if they are against Defunding the police?

  14. I don’t think “defunding the police” means what YOU THINK it means! It does NOT mean taking away police, it does mean funneling money into social systems and psychiatric care for the poorest and most at-risk of our populace. It DOES mean taking away the “big boy toys” that the cops have and directing that money to our community.

  15. RHS, Exactly my point! The cops often have an “us vs. them” mentality and treat civilians like criminals that are not innocent until proven guilty. The cops have, across the nation, become a club of above ground mafia that think they are above the law. I’d much rather see a paramedic help someone who is suicidal off a ledge than a cop!
