Two Juveniles Arrested in Fatal Eastside Shooting

[Friday] evening the Santa Barbara Police Department arrested two suspects for their involvement in the March 29, 2021 Shooting and Homicide which occurred in the 1400 block of Eucalyptus Hill Road at approximately 5:20 PM.  The victim of the shooting, Jesus Espinosa-Maldonado, 04/20/1997, an Oxnard resident, was taken to the hospital immediately after the shooting, but ultimately succumbed to his injury and was pronounced dead on March 31, 2021 at 11:28 AM. 

The two suspects taken into custody were both juveniles, ages 17 and 15.  Both are residents of Santa Barbara.  The suspects were booked at Santa Barbara Juvenile Hall on the following charges: 187 PC, Murder with special circumstances – Furtherance of Gang 190.2(a) (22) PC, 12022.53 (e) (1) PC, with Special allegations – Gang Felony Use of a Gun, 186.22 (b) (1).  Their names and other identifying information are being withheld due to their age.

Detectives also arrested Irene Fernandez, 39 of Santa Barbara for the following charges: 32 PC, Accessory to a felony with special circumstances; 187(a) PC, gang murder with use of a firearm, 190.2 (a) (22) PC, 186.22(b)(1) PC, 12022.53 (e) (1) PC. She was booked at Santa Barbara County Jail for the above listed charges. 

The police department would like to thank the community members who assisted with the investigation, as well as the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office for their help during the initial shooting.

Although arrests have been made, the investigation is still ongoing and no further details are being released at this time.

  1. Mama possibly had a gun ‘ol Johnny boy took and likely used in this homicide. Once she knew what happened with the gun, she concealed the gun and the boy and this led to her arrest. Mama is released no bail and ‘ol Johnny boy is released in her care:) ? Nothing like a parenting class that (might) help eliminate problems of this type. But, just like drug addiction, these problems can’t be stopped until these people want to change.

  2. Juvie Hall is a joke- If you’re under 18, there are virtually no consequences for criminal behavior, which sends a great message to these Jr. Bangers that even as adults there are very little life changes for bad behavior- Crime pays

  3. If someone’s dog kills someone, we can hold the owner responsible. But If someone’s KID kills someone, not only do the parents escape liability, the PARENTS enjoy privacy protection as well. Meanwhile, victims enjoy NO rights.
