Get a metal roof, not shingles. Such a roof can be reasonably expected to be cooler than a dark color asphalt shingles roof. It is best to choose a light color metal such as white, light bronze, beige, peach, light green or blue. Fire protective.

We were very happy with Alliance Roofing, Art, ‭(805) 216-1878‬. Metal roofs are nice, but $$$. The are some ‘cool’ composition shingles available, like GAF’s cool roof line. Look for an EnergyStar rating and buy the coolest roof you can afford.

We like the guys at Tower roofing. My $0.02 is that metal roofs are a waste of money. Sure, get it in a snowy region. Otherwise a nice 25 year asphalt shingle is the way to go. Now windows, that's where you should spend some money...

Just don't use Action Roofing. What a bunch of loudmouth workmen and shoddy work. And don't get hardishake or anything similar. We made that mistake and now no one can walk on the roof (painting, repair) ever, because the tiles break easily. Don't forget to find out if you're in a fire danger area. That requires certain types of material. Best of luck.

On a side note, you will need to get a permit from the city. You should try to get the roofer to do it rather than yourself. My roof needed 20 "squares" of shingles, and the permit was just shy of $500 (for a "nailing" inspection, and a final inspection....both of which were a JOKE). Also, the city will make you install the appropriate number of smoke alarms and CO2 detectors, and require an inspector to verify OR you need to complete a legal doc stating that you've installed them. For roofers: Craig Roofing.

In the event that you do choose to reroof without a permit, be sure the new roof matches the color of the old roof. The city can see the difference through Google Earth.

Safegard Roofing. Troy Lobdell 963-3918. He and his crew are fast, efficient and have a high standard of excellence. He did my roof and a number of neighborhood homes as well as large estates. Go for the "presidential" roof, costs a bit more but will last your lifetime.

Five Star Roofing. (805) 310-1133. Willy and his crew drive down with their massive trucks from Santa Maria, so not exactly local. His work is top notch and his prices below those charged in Santa Barbara. He's done the roof on my rental units, my house, and my neighbors. Everyone loves Willy.

I’ll second that vote for Tower Roofing. They did it fast and were very professional. Great job. It’s such a relief to have a sound roof over your head.

Three years ago I played the roof comparison game and hired Craig Roof (805) 966-5331‬‬‬ and am very pleased with the result. I actually called the ten options in town and asked for home inspections so I could compare bids. The first to respond was Home Depot and their salesman was so slimy that was out of consideration. The next guy didn't even go up on the roof to make his bid. The next told me the work could start in 2 weeks, after he took his vacation where he and his buddies were going fishing in Mexico at a marine sanctuary where there were LOTS of fish because you weren't allowed to fish there unless you bribed someone. I was SO offended that he would think it appropriate to break the law and endanger fish in a sanctuary I even wrote to his employers telling them what he said and explaining I wouldn't patronize a business represented by a person of such low character. After a full week of a parade of clowns I hired Paul Craig, whose workers were fast and accurate. The Boss himself came and inspected once the old roof was off and showed me the parts that needed some rotted beam replacements, which they did. They made sure to pick up any old tiles or nails that fell off into the yard, and it was a pleasure to watch their process. I highly recommend Craig Roof.

Yes, Martin Roofing IS the best. They also have the best sheet metal shop in town specializing in custom copper gutters, flashings, chimney caps etc. Not just copper, they are experts in stainless steel or repair of old lead flashings or simple galvanized products. Good, skilled honest people.

Thanks for the input. It’s very helpful. I have a clay tile roof that’s in need of re-roofing in certain sections. Is there a roofer who does this type of work anyone can recommend? Thx
