While researching Old Mission Santa Barbara photos, I came across these two post 1925 earthquake photos.

It got me wondering how a rebuilt mission in a popular Jeff Shelton-esque style would look. This would certainly be a conversation starter!

We hope and pray the need never happens again, however...

What If... Jeff Shelton Re-Did the Mission?

I love Jeff Shelton's designs. I think his buildings add a unique splash to our town. Spanish style architecture can get rather repetitive, and Shelton's designs, drawing inspiration from Gaudi, keep it from getting too boring. That being said, the Mission is an historic structure and although I"m sure Shelton could put quite a spin on it, I don't think anyone would be serious about having him give it a makeover.

A few times have passed by Jeff's studio with out of town friends, inevitably he is hospitable and kind, sharing a few minutes to welcome us. That is really appreciated.

MESARATS - You are very correct. Spain was under the Moors for 700 years. The architecture here in SB is both of Spanish and Moorish. I myself am of Spanish/Mexican/Morrish/ Celtic descent. (I have been mistaken for Iranian by Iranians several times, and others from the Middle East, non secular. They have called me brother.)

What if it were Dario Pini, Edward St. George or Alan Bleeker (owner of Capitol Hardware.) They would have totally tore it down and build housing that would not be affordable. Good thing they were not around in 1925.

Jeff Shelton is like Gaudi, Hundertwasser, and Dr Suess rolled into one. I love his work as it is a refreshing change to the cookie cutter Mediteranean style that abounds.

Jeff Shelton's work is beautiful, created by a genius ,who pays his workers! The Native American slaves that built the original mission would loved to have had him as their boss.

What is the overpass? I love his designs of houses downtown, including the Ablitt Tower! Doubt, though, that the dark history of the Mission would be the appropriate place for his playful design.

Jeff Shelton is a welcome antidote to the boring, and unimaginative. Santa Barbara is lucky to have him.
I think Jeff would have handled the history and architecture of the SB Mission in an imaginative, but respectful way

The thought of HIM getting involved in ANY thing involving design is revolting. The overpass and his house on Santa Barbara Street are examples. How could the powers-that-be have approved either of those let alone to have put him in charge of the State Street underpass.

Don’t dismiss learning how a bureaucracy works. Just because you didn’t figure it out, or hire someone who does, doesn’t make those that do corrupt or less than.
The value system that underpins SB zoning and permitting has generated the towns distinctive identity that didn’t really make money until this century.
If you wanted a more easy gummint you could have chosen Ventura or OC. But then we could also have SB look like Newport Beach

Seriously, and the Emperor has new clothes. City overreach is a big problem with simple home improvements. The toontown style amazes me with the strict Architect Review process we have here..

NOV 5, 12:51 - Talk about lowering neighbor's property value on Santa Barbara Street. I understand there are many contributors to this gaudy (not Gaudi) fixture. How was this allowed to be built. Use to be some 'junkies" lived in the area way back when. I don't think in their wildest "highs" or hallucinations they could have ever seen something like this.

Yes, that house on Santa Barbara Street, Barff! A peon citizen would never be allowed to do that. Some special people are allowed special treatment.

Shelton is the epitome of "I know a guy". You and I couldn't even have and "unfriendly" sideways door, yet this guy can turn our entire town into smurf village. We tried to add a small bedroom to our house and it was a disaster of government overreach yet this guy can "toon" up our entire downtown.
