Water Rescue at Stearn’s Wharf

Police were investigating a call of an individual reportedly unstable and heading toward the pier. Witnesses said they had seen the same man at the pier the day before making threatening comments to passersby.

At one point during Thursday’s incident, the man swam out to the end of Stearns Wharf, climbed up to apparently surrender, then bolted across the pier, eluding emergency crews, and jumped off the end back into the water.

The ordeal went on for about an hour before the man was again convinced to come up a ladder and turn himself in for a mental evaluation and treatment.

No one was hurt in Thursday’s incident. Stearns Wharf was closed to vehicles during the incident.
