Sheriff’s Deputies Locate Suspect Reportedly Armed with Sword in Old Town Goleta Following Extensive Search

At approximately 8:20 p.m. tonight, April 30, 2019, Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a suspect reportedly armed with a samurai sword in the 100 block of Fairview Road and Mandarin Drive in the City of Goleta. The suspect got into a verbal dispute with another male subject in front of the McDonald’s restaurant, made threatening statements and brandished a sword. He fled the area as deputies were responding.

Deputies from Goleta and the Isla Vista Foot Patrol assisted by CHP officers secured a perimeter and began a thorough search of the area for the suspect. Multiple Sheriff’s K9 teams and a County Helicopter assisted in the search. Residents in Old Town Goleta were sent an emergency notification to shelter in place. Amtrak train service was temporarily halted to due to the proximity of the search on and near the train tracks.

At approximately 10:15 p.m., a Sheriff’s deputy located the suspect walking in the 100 block of Kellogg Avenue near Hollister Avenue and he was arrested at gunpoint. The suspect has been identified as being 38-year-old King Rosario of Goleta. The sword was determined to be a wooden replica samurai sword.

King was transported to the Santa Barbara County Jail and is booked on charges of brandishing and possessing a deadly weapon. He is being held on $20,000 bail.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office contracts with the City of Goleta for police services.

I apologize to other readers for jumping to conclusions or misreading that the man brandishing sword was homeless. As for it being a wooden look-like, I suppose the same laws apply to that as to using a gun replica, but in contrition from my previous hubris, refrain from saying it actually is.

He is probably out by now on that bail 245pc Assault with a deadly weapon you can kill someone with a toothpick...422pc Criminal threats those are the ones that will stick and he may do time but if he doesn't maybe he will get small time and anger management.

"wooden replica samurai sword" - I'm assuming that means a wooden sword? If so, why the deadly weapon charge? It's just a stick, basically.

They make those things for use in classes and training. It would really hurt if someone whacked you with it. In the classes they wear substantial protective gear.

Hope all the good people who work at that MacDonald's were ok. I appreciate that this MacDonalds has a sign out asking customers not to give to the homeless. There are a few very large encampments along the tracks in this area so of course people assume the homeless are causing some of these situations. Until all these encampments are cleared out, the homeless issues along the 101/train tracks will continue. I read that SB City spent $70.000 on homeless clean up last year. Lompoc spent more than $1 million to clean up their riverbed. If the Goleta-Montecito areas were to clean up all the encampments that have been allowed, I bet it would cost $50 million. Take the train. You will see what I mean.

Another "homeless" camp contribution to our neighborhood's safety/anxiety level. And they wonder why everyone but bleeding hearts want these shut down. It's not only periodic fire risk and sanitation, sidewalk harrassment problems, and the numbers keep going up as they drift up 101.

I can hear the helicopter circling from patterson. ADS-B shows the sheriff helicopter circling around Fairview for a while and now he is circling from about the 217 all the way to Turnpike.

Just saw on Facebook it was an "armed gunman." Is this separate from the other sword wielding suspect Roger posted about tonight?
