At approximately 11:50 a.m. today, July 27, 2018, Sheriff’s deputies observed a reported stolen Cal Fire pickup truck driving near Augusta St. in Los Alamos. The truck had been recently stolen out of Northern California and was associated with a subsequent theft in Pismo Beach. Sheriff’s deputies followed the stolen pick-up truck while additional resources responded. When the driver observed law enforcement, he began actively evading and a pursuit ensued on Highway 135 west of Los Alamos.

A Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Fire/Air Support Unit helicopter responded to assist in the pursuit as did personnel from the California Highway Patrol. The suspect drove onto Hwy 1 and eventually merged with Hwy. 135 and continued towards Orcutt. Just outside of Orcutt, the suspect made a U-turn on Highway 135 near Clark Ave. and started driving S/B Hwy. 135 towards Vandenberg Air Force Base.

On Hwy 1, near the Hwy. 135 interchange near Graciosa Road attempted another U-turn in a sandy soft-centered median. Before he could make it back onto the roadway, deputies used pursuit intervention techniques to successfully stop the vehicle. Due to the collaborative efforts of Sheriff’s deputies, CHP Officers and Security Forces from Vandenberg Air Force Base, the suspect was arrested at gunpoint and taken into custody without further incident.

The suspect was identified as being 38-year-old Donald Schellinger, a transient from Northern California. He will be booked at the Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of 2800.2 VC, Felony reckless evading; 496 PC, Possession of stolen property; 10851 VC, Vehicle theft; and 3056 PC, Parole violation.

  1. Cal Fire Truck is a 2016 Ford pick up truck with a camper shell and light bar it is a Cal Fire vehicle California plate 1485547….Taken out of Pismo heading South…Determination has not been made weather or not it was stolen from Monterey County…

  2. You don’t need to yell , and yes it was a truck and you of all people should know the difference ie. Engine 1, Truck 1 and yep even Rescue 1 is a truck. You obviously just want to start an argument since I never said it was not a truck. So have at it but I’m done.

  3. DESTAG – Actually, I don’t really care what kind of vehicle it was. That anyone would steal a Fire UNIT is upsetting. Along with driving at high speeds, and recklessly. It IS somewhat of a relief that it wasn’t a larger vehicle, much less what is often referred to as a fire engine, which I believe is actually a large truck with special adaptations to it. My concept of an engine, is that of a motor used to move the fire ‘trucks’ or ‘engines’ (and the different adaptations on them. Ladders, water pumps, etc) as they are often referred to. Nothing to be upset about if someone doesn’t use the right term as you may know it to be, anyway.

  4. It is not a fire “engine”, so please refrain from capitalizing bogus info. It clearly states in all references including your link that it is a pickup truck, a far cry from a 1,000 gal. capacity “engine” with a pump.
