I saw this yesterday and despite being a 15+ year Mesa dweller, don’t recall having seen this type of collection before.
There were about 21 in the pile, clearly molts, with another dozen or so in the immediate vicinity. None seemed bigger than the minimum consumption size of 3 1/4 inch. Guessing some kids had fun collecting them off the beach over the weekend.
According to some nerds, California spiny lobster molt about 40 times in their first 6 years; the average time it takes them to reach a legal consumption size.
