Santa Maria Teen Arrested for Attempted Robbery

On Tuesday, December 17, 2019, at about 1644 hours, Santa Maria Police Officers were dispatched to the area of Morrison Ave. and Thornburg St. to a report of a subject in possession of a handgun. As officers arrived on scene they saw a person matching the description of the person with a gun. This person, later identified as 18 year old Jacob Aceves, and subject he was with, immediately ran from Thornburg Street onto the Santa Maria High School campus as officers arrived in the area. At the time, there were several students on campus attending various after-school activities. 

In an attempt to locate the fleeing suspects, officers set a perimeter around the school’s campus, at which time an officer encountered Aceves trying to escape the perimeter at the south end of the campus. As Aceves was being detained, an observant school employee approached officers and led them to a location he saw Aceves discard something next to a classroom. Of ficers located a loaded handgun at this location. Aceves was arrested for various weapons violations.

An officer assigned to this call noticed Aceves matched the description of an attempt robbery that occurred over an hour before Aceves’ arrest. In this robbery, Aceves approached a male juvenile, physically restrained him while demanding money. The juvenile was able to break free from Aceves’ hold and run for help. Through additional investigation, Aceves was positively identified as the suspect. 

Aceves was transported and booked in the Santa Barbara County Jail for attempted robbery and various weapons violations, to include possession of a loaded firearm on school campus. Bail was set at $50,000.00.
