By the edhat staff

A brush fire broke out in the Santa Maria Riverbed on Wednesday afternoon.

Around noon crews from CalFire San Luis Obispo responded to the area off Highway 101 along Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo county lines, just north of the City of Santa Maria.

It took less than an hour for firefighters to fully contain the blaze dubbed the “Hutton Fire.”

CalFire estimated the fire to around 1/8 of an acre. Crews will remain on the scene to cleanup and monitor.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

  1. Considering that directly to the left of the edge of this photo, is a large encampment, not much to investigate. This area is saturated with homeless camps, that have fires going daily. It is very frightening for those who walk here and have houses along side the riverbed. Time to clear this area out and mow down the dry brush. It is as if SM is just waiting for one big fire before they take this seriously.
