The Santa Maria Police Department released video footage from an officer-involved shooting that occurred on June 21, 2020. The completed Critical Incident Community Briefing is available in both English and Spanish, and incorporates video footage and factual information for public viewing.

On June 21, 2020, the Santa Maria Police Department Communications Center received a 911 call of a man waving a gun in front of numerous community members at Boomer’s Miniature Golf Arcade, 2250 N. Preisker Lane.

The first Santa Maria police officer arrived shortly after the 911 call was received and observed the suspect near the intersection of Broadway and Preisker Lane. The suspect brandished a handgun and an officer-involved shooting occurred. The officer’s in-car video system captured the incident.

The Santa Maria Police Department remains committed to transparency. In the future it will periodically release Critical Incident Community Briefings after carefully evaluating any effect the release may have on the integrity of the investigation, the degree of public interest in the event, the availability of Department Resources and any constraints resulting from current or upcoming legislation.

WARNING: The Santa Maria Police Department cautions all viewers, as the content of this Critical Incident Community Briefing contains graphic content.

  1. Shame on you for shooting and killing a young man that was obviously suffering from a mental health disorder. There were many options you could have taken. Please consider retaking CIT (Crisis Intervention Team) training.

  2. I like the SMPD – they’re way more open than SB’s PD. Every time they had a DUI checkpoint, they’d release the statistics, no matter how silly and ineffective it made them look (eg, 900 checks, 0 DUI). SB has yet to even once release the numbers on their checkpoints. SB would never release footage like this either.
