Santa Maria Offering $100 Vouchers to Tourists

By edhat staff
The City of Santa Maria is offering $100 vouchers for tourists to visit the area for a minimum of two nights.
Travelers who stay in local hotels now through March 31 will receive a voucher that can be used at wineries, breweries, restaurants, and attractions in the Santa Maria Valley.
The promotion was created by "Visit Santa Maria Valley" and launched on Thursday. According to the website, it's already sold out, but there is a waiting list.
"Our $100 stimulus offer is currently sold out, but that doesn't mean you can't still plan a visit! Explore lodging, dining and attractions and start planning your next getaway," the website states.

Under a header of "Do More for Less in Santa Maria Valley," the website boasts the area has nearby beaches, beautiful hotels, and wineries for the budget-conscious traveler. There are 34 wine tasting rooms within a 30-minute drive as well as hiking, golfing, art exploration, and birdwatching, the promotion states.
An area map showing attractions, dining, and arts includes the Pismo Beach, Nipomo, Orcutt, Lompoc, Los Alamos, and Solvang cities as well as Santa Maria.
The website also asserts businesses and attractions are following the state's guidelines for a safe reopening due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We expect that all visitors to the area will do their part to respect our region and our state by practicing social distancing, wearing a mask and washing their hands regularly," the website states.

Feb 05, 2021 06:04 PMTiers shmeirs, people take this tier stuff way too personally and really think it guarantees you some sort of safety net. Wrong. The only tier we have is called life and there are zero guarantees.

Feb 05, 2021 03:15 PMThis is outrageous! What will they come up with next, sending children to school? Opening museums? Or god forbid, would they attempt to revive the performing arts? This must be stopped!

Feb 05, 2021 03:34 PMAbsolute stupidity. The travel and hospitality industry is just a small part of the county's larger economy. You wouldn't know that by watching KEYT's nearly nightly obsession with stories about restaurants and bars. Endangering our residents to please one special interest group only slows down our overall economic recovery.

Feb 06, 2021 10:43 AMAlong these same lines, who was visiting Santa Maria before the pandemic? It's not like they're trying to recover their tourism industry that never existed.

Feb 05, 2021 05:26 PMCan you use the voucher to rent a bullet proof vest?
It is Santa Maria after all.
Seriously, what is there to visit as a tourist?
Costco? Popeye's?
The beautiful packed like sardines housing tracts on Blosser?
Did you know they have 2 WalMarts? - well, one is a Neighborhood Market but whatever.

Feb 06, 2021 06:45 AMWow! To think some brain-dead grifters working for the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce got paid good money to dream up this idiocy. LOL

Feb 06, 2021 07:25 AMPurchasing the vouchers should include a sign-off on seeking Covid treatment in SB County for the duration of the visit and 14 days subsequently. Something like indemnifying Disneyland if one chooses to ride a roll-a-coaster or signs up to participate in a bronco-busting event in a rodeo. Freedom of choice needs to come with responsibility for it.

Feb 08, 2021 07:28 AMYou seem knowledgeable about this. That stuff doesn't happen anywhere else. I didn't have a young woman ask me if I wanted a "date" in the early morning on Haley St in SB once.

Why is SM encouraging tourist who might bring Covid to them?
Seriously? Open up or stay closed. Make up your minds! Now they’re paying people to travel? Seriously messed up leaders and public health officials!

Feb 08, 2021 11:48 AMYou know, I've been looking at the numbers, and the case rate in Los Angeles county is now the same as SB county. We've caught up to them, I guess. So, where's the risk?
