Jul 02, 2022 04:07 PMThe story that I found out is that a few years back, the SB Poet Laureate visited Dingle with a couple of other poets (one was a previous SB Poet Laureate) and they felt that were treated poorly. There was some sort of mixup as to the date/location of the poetry recital by our SB poets. Unfortunately, "our" poets" decided this was not going to go unpunished. As payback, the SB Board of Sister Cities (or whatever it is called), dissolved the sister-city relationship back in January of 2020. There is an article in an Irish news website entitled, "What did Dingle ever do to Santa Barbara?" Then goes on to say, "Santa Barbara and Dingle have been sister cities for 17 years. In January, the Californian side set about dissolving these links and hit out and its counterpart." Only subscribers can access the rest of the article....maybe someone here has access and can post "their" side of the story.
As a side note: IF you ever get the chance to visit Dingle....just do it! I was there in April of 1981 and had a great time. I know a lot can change in 40 years, but my guess is that the people are just as nice and accommodating now as they were when I visited so many years ago.

Jul 03, 2022 01:33 PMI've been unsupportive of the SB Sister Cities committees since they treated Dingle so horribly. It makes us all look bad. If I ever go there, I'll be sure to not mention being from Santa Barbara.
