Last weekend we went to the Rise Lantern Festival. Located on the Mowapa Paiute Indian Reservation, North Las Vegas.  We were given a mat, a pen and two lanterns.

As the sun set 13,000 people gathered and prepared their lanterns.  8:15pm, torches were lit and we worked together for The Rise.

You can’t explain the feeling as you watched your lantern Rise higher and higher, everyone with a different message.  Only days after the shooting, #VegasStrong.

it’s not like fires only happen in California! The closeness of the border or fires wasn’t the point I was making. There’s a reason this was hosted on an Indian reservation. Parks dept also against it. The organizers have no control over the lanterns path of travel. Just a dumb thing to do in a tinder box part of the country.

These pics are all wonderful, but that "cover" (the first pic) photo is beautiful. I say this without judgement. I find it interesting that quite a bit fewer people attended this, than attended the concert...

Maybe I woke up on the wrong side of the bed or I just don't get it. 13,000 people pay to send naked flames into the air right next to a State literally on fire! The organizers claim to recover 100% of the lanterns from the "landing area" They have control of the wind? They also claim the lanterns are 100% biodegradable, uh huh sure. Seems like a whole lot of trouble to go through so some hipsters can post endlessly about it on Instagram.

Nevada isn't magically immune from wildfire. I mentioned the California wildfires as they are literal evidence of the vast destruction fires bring and were literally happening as this idiocy was being carried out. The State certainly didn't want this event to happen, the parks department don't want it to occur. Humans who think they can control or predict nature are dangerous. This event exploits Indian lands for a photo op and endangers lives. Dumb

Yes, you DID wake up grouchy. This is about 100 miles from the CA border. It's also about 250 miles (as the crow flies) from the nearest wildfire in CA (Quarry Fire in Kern County, 158 acres and stopped per Cal Fire). These are paper lanterns that will burn out LONG before they travel even close to CA. Relax, it's going to be OK.

Awesome photos Patti-that first one gave me the chills...loving the togetherness. Photos like that give me hope that we could end (or at least lessen) violence and hate!
