MOVIES WAY BACK WHEN: A Throw-Away Car

The adventure serials that were popular during the silent-movie years often involved trashing cars. This one was sacrificed for a 1917 Vitagraph serial that was filmed in Santa Barbara called “The Fighting Trail” starring William Duncan.

“William Duncan . . . took his company up . . .  north of Santa Barbara, recently for the purpose of throwing an auto off the cliff into the ocean, 80 feet below. That’s just one of the ‘thrills’ promised in this speedy serial.” – Motography, June 6, 16, 1917
