We came out of Home Improvement and it began to rain large, hard drops. We turned onto Garden and the wind and rain started increasing. It was hard to manage the Jeep so we pulled to the side of the Garden underpass for protection. Deciding if we should get on the sidewalk closer to the wall we watched a tree split and fall off right in front of us. We watched as the wind spun leaves in front of us. It felt like we were in a wind tunnel. When the wind subsided we drove off to get away. The waterfront was flooded with branches and debris. I will not be surprised if it is classified as a tornado. Scary, very scary.

Sep 03, 2017 07:20 PMRainfall map on the County website has good reporting--so variable, really depends on where you were in town how much it rained. Normal for thunderstorms. Here's the link:

Sep 03, 2017 11:33 PMI've been gorging on Youtube videos of today's microburst!
Here's a great one. Thanks, Jeff Wortham!!
Unbelievable. Check it out at 1:00.
I'd say the crown in this vid is a ton, easy. Took one out once on Castillo; shook the street when the crown hit the ground.

Sep 04, 2017 03:56 PMA microburst is not a "mini tornado"

Sep 04, 2017 09:17 PMNew2sb-subscribers reported some of these photos just minutes after the microburst happened, they were probably shaken up and didnt really know what it was at that point, if you want to be treated nicely in your new town then don't start off by being a know it all, some people don't know the names of everything and to some it felt like a mini tornado and in a panic that's what they called it.

Sep 05, 2017 08:11 AMGood for you with your insulting comment. The simple fact is that common sense is required to keep oneself and loved ones safe with dangerous weather or anything else harmful for that matter. When the sky turns dark on the horizon, it's time to get off the water and off the beach. I was on east beach prior this event happening. I warned numerous folks to pick up and go for safety sake. Why the sky gets dark, pack up the umbrella, get inside. Luckily, no one was seriously injured by flying "fun gear" because of lack of COMMON SENSE! Perhaps, they were just smoking dope and enjoying the sight of approaching lightning and black clouds on the beach and water!

Sep 05, 2017 11:46 AMWow, you really are new to SB. Common sense is based on common experiences. A weather situation such as what happened has NEVER happened here, at least not that any of us can remember. So no, it's NOT "common sense" in this area to run for cover at the sight of dark clouds at the beach. Look, maybe wherever you are from it is, but in your new town, it's not. Don't be "that person" please.

Sep 06, 2017 07:22 AMWow is right! When you see black clouds rolling in and lightning, you get off the water, beach, mountain, golf course, or wherever! You don't cross the street when you see a wave of traffic speeding towards you, do you? Common sense is not an instinct based upon past experience alone. Common sense is good judgement in practical matters!

Sep 05, 2017 10:43 PMGood update!!

"A few hours ago my family and I left the Children's hospital in LA. Alyssa is progressing, very slowly, but nonetheless progressing. Her next surgery was moved to tomorrow, and will undergo a lot of reconstructive cosmetic surgeries to get her bones back in the correct places, on top off a very long head/skull surgery. She is currently off her breathing tube and able to breath on her own a lot better, but will be placed back on it during and after her surgery tomorrow. She is able to show small head nods and very little movements in her fingers and toes. She is beginning to verbalize small phrases and is able to detect her parents, and family members voices. Her eyes are still swollen so very hard for her to open. We are continuing to pray for our little trooper, and keep her in very positive high spirits going into her following surgeries. Her parents, my family and I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to show support through phones calls, text messages, and donations. Thank you all, this is beyond anything we expected and are so grateful. "

Sep 05, 2017 10:16 PMSB Surfing cam. All credit to them. Pretty normal harbor traffic at the sandspit in a 9:31 tape -- until raindrops are seen about 8:32. just jump to 8:20. Seems the camera was tracking the Land Shark. We were oh so lucky!
