A man was rescued after becoming wedged between two wooden pilings on the Goleta Pier early Saturday morning.

Just before 4:00 a.m., Santa Barbara County firefighters responded to a Goleta Beach for a reported water rescue. Crews discovered a male in his 60s had become wedged between two wooden pilings approximately 3/4 of the way out of the 1,500 foot pier.

The man was suffering from hypothermia and was reportedly yelling for help for several hours before being discovered by a boat dropping off workers from the offshore oil platform.

Two rescue boarders and one watercraft were able to bring the man to shore within twenty minutes. He was assessed and transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital via ground ambulance for treatment.

"He's lucky to be alive," said SBCFD public information officer Mike Eliason.

He was" yelling for help for several hours," and it took a while to get him un-wedged. Maybe he swam out there around midnight or so. His alcohol level probably helped keep him warm . . . at first.

Totally weird coincidence considering SBC Fire launched watercraft from campus point at 2 Am to rescue the IV kids floating offshore in Home Depot buckets. This guy was probably yelling for help all that time.

What the??? indeed. 2 weird incidents in the same night is quite a coincidence.

Noozhawk: "In a second early morning water rescue, a man in his 60s was lucky to be alive after he became trapped under the Goleta Beach Pier, Eliason said.
Firefighters responded just before 4 a.m. to the pier, where the man was wedged between two of the wooden pilings. He was trapped near the boat hoist, about three-quarters of the way along the 1,500-foot-long pier. "

doubt he was swimming...even drunk, that's just dumb and puts you in the food chain. that specific area of the pier is heavily fished. he could have gone down to look for a spot to fish low rather than up on the pier. i see a lot of people do that. he could have been a little "wider" than most of us and just got stuck. sucks but funny at the same time. i see a lot of students dive off the pier in the mornings during summer at that spot too. i have fished that pier and that spot for 4 decades and have seen several things that make me wonder about the human race.
