Montecito Firefighters responded to a report of a kite surfer in distress off Miramar Beach on Monday evening.
Around 6:30 p.m., the Montecito Fire Department received a call from Miramar Resort employees to report they had lost sight of a kite surfer in the water.
Montecito Fire responded with an engine, Battalion Chief, and water rescue squad with assistance from the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District, a boat from Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol, a watercraft and helicopter from Santa Barbara County Fire, and another boat and helicopter from the US Coast Guard.
Search efforts were complicated by high winds in the area, the Montecito Fire Department reported.
The National Weather Service had issued a wind advisory for Montecito due to 20-30 mph winds with gusts of 50-60 mph.
At 8:00 p.m. Monday, the missing kite surfer reported he self-rescued and abandoned his foil in the water, the Montecito Fire Department reports.

Well, at least the crew got some beach launch practice.
Did they collect the kooks trash that was abandoned?
