Two people sustained major injuries in a head-on vehicle collision on Highway 1, shutting down the freeway in both directions.

At 7:03 a.m., Santa Barbara County firefighters responded along with Lompoc City firefighters to a vehicle collision just south of Ocean Ave in Lompoc.

Crews found one occupant in each vehicle, a female driver in her mid 30’s and a male driver in 50’s. Both drivers required extensive extrication to get out of the vehicle and both were in serious condition with major injuries, said County Fire Captain Dave Zaniboni.

The female was flown to Santa Barbara Cottage via CalStar helicopter. The male was transported to Marian Medical via ground ambulance.

Highway 1 is currently closed in both directions, and California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident.

  1. I have to agree with COASTWATCH. I drive this road from SB to Lompoc for work and I cannot tell you how many times I see people swerving while obviously on their technology. It happens all over but on 2 lane highways like this (aka highway 154) it seems there are more collisions like this.
