Gas Leak in Los Alamos

A major gas leak evacuated a section of Los Alamos on Monday afternoon.

At 12:37 p.m., Santa Barbara County firefighters responded to the intersection of Bell and Augusta Streets for a report of a ruptured gas line. A utility company was digging a trench in an area on Bell Street and struck a two-inch main gas line underground and ruptured it, said Captain Dave Zaniboni.

Due to the major leak and security hazard, crews closed Bell Street for two blocks in both directions, evacuating two businesses. The Chevron gas station and Subway had to be evacuated as they were adjacent to the gas leak.

Captain Zaniboni stated the gas was leaking for nearly two hours while the gas company waited for additional equipment.

No injuries were reported.
