Multiple callouts for SBCSAR has kicked off a busy holiday weekend, Friday afternoon the team responded to a missing Project Lifesaver client near Westmont College. Luckily the client was found safely by deputies on patrol in the area just before teams arrived with specialized tracking equipment to locate the client. While clearing this call, team members were requested to aid in the rescue of a missing person whom had been located in a ravine off East Mountain Drive. This subject had been missing for several days, public help had been sought to assist in locating the individual and associated vehicle and luckily been found alive but injured. Team members arrived and assisted deputies on scene, Montecito Fire and AMR extract the subject out of the ravine and into the ambulance. The subject was assessed by AMR and transported to Cottage Hospital for treatment of injuries.

Just after 3pm on Saturday afternoon, SBCSAR responded with SB County Fire Station 15, AMR and SB County Air Support Copter 3 to reports of a subject with heat exhaustion. Two hikers had set out and become exhausted in the heat of the day in the 7 Falls area of Mission Canyon and called when one of the two were showing signs of needing medical assistance. Teams hiked up to the location, based on where the subjects were, SAR determined that proceeding from the Seven Falls trail up would be the most efficient route. Just as the initial SAR ground team was above 7 Falls, Copter 3 was able to locate the subjects and began insertion of medics and evaluated the two subjects. It was determined that hoisting the two subjects out would be best based on condition, once hoisted the subjects were flown to SB Airport to be evaluated by AMR. SAR ground teams were on standby during the hoist of the subjects should a second option be needed.

As Teams hiked out from the 7 Falls area, SBCSAR was dispatched to an injured hiker at the Gaviota Wind Caves. The hiker had injured their ankle and a trail carry out was initiated. SAR responded with SB County Fire Station 38 and AMR and assisted with the carry out. The hiker was evaluated by AMR at the trailhead.

SBCSAR would like to remind those out hiking to hike within ones limits, take the essentials (water, food, clothing and communication device) and to also hike in the cooler hours of the day (early morning/late afternoon).

Santa Barbara County Search & Rescue is a professional, all volunteer and unpaid 501(c)3 organization that is community supported by generous giving to provide services to the County of Santa Barbara under the direction of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office. Agree w Luv and TJ - the point is we are all paying for this and a lot of us who frequent the outdoors (or not) believe in the idea of personal responsibility. More and more people are relying on someone else to to bail them out around here. It’s a real trend - come out clueless, no water, take snapshots, post big selfies on your favorite social media, take a fall, and start panicking for 911.

Let’s not do that, shall we?

He's probably on SS and medicare while claiming he's an independent man...
These whiners are just that. Whiners. They listen to talk radio all day, whining. They watch FoxNews all eve, whine. They read their "conservative" blogger, whine. They listen to their chosen demagogue Politician, whine. They go to their fake church and listen to their charlatan preacher, whine. The entire right-wing base are really nothing but whiners. If they could actually do something, anything, they'd. have done it by now... In fact, they'd be rich and happy and not spending their entire lives whining. But nope. They're dumb, lazy and uneducated. So instead of building a better life, they whine. All the while the world goes on, happily, without knowing or caring that they exist...

Basic show us how you are paying for this. Please give a total breakdown of all costs that you know of. Bunch of whining arm chair warriors on this thread. i do SAR and have done SAR in foreign lands as well. the costs are irrelevant to the safety of those in need. it's only relevant to cranky, sad people like yourself that want to shame people for going out and living life. shit happens.

Job well done SAR, so glad we have you in our community! I know you don't charge for rescue, but hopefully some of these folks provide a donation afterwards.

I think what Lavaduck is trying to say is that we have a very well-funded and generous SAR program and some might feel people are taking advantage of that safety net. Either by lack of planning, forsight or personnel fortitude. SARs in other counties might not bring out helicopters for ankle injuries....

Charge them actual costs. Not inflated, but actual time & materials to get them out alive with consideration to extenuating circumstances if there are any. Getting bitten by a snake is a lot different than not carrying enough water or clothing or exceeding your own known physical condition. The latter are what the Darwin Awards are for.

Luvaduk, i do SAR and your view of this is just warped. No we will not charge people that are in dire need of medical assistance and rescuing. that's just horrible and twisted. Darwin award goes to you for pure lack of intelligence and empathy. Two important parts of being a human being. If you think SAR is here to punish and scold people, you're wrong. We are volunteers that risk our safety for the safety of others, not for people like you that sit in a chair and bark out things like, charge them! shame on them! they should know better blah blah blah.

Go ahead luvaduc, haggle with search and rescue. Sounds like a great plan. “I can get saved for half the price from a friends of a friends with atv’s…….”

“Actual costs” you have no idea what actual costs are to initiate a helicopter extraction.
