County Road Sealing and Resurfacing Project

Source: Public Works

16 lane miles of County maintained roads are scheduled to be resurfaced as part of the 2016/17 scrub seal and microsurface project. The County of Santa Barbara Public Works Department will inspect and administer the construction of this project which will begin on June 5, 2017. Contractors are scheduled to work Monday through Friday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. The project should be complete, weather permitting, by late August 2017.

The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors awarded the construction contract to Sierra Nevada Construction, Inc. on May 9, 2017. The cost of the project is estimated at $877,000 and completely funded by the County General Fund.

Public Works Director Scott McGolpin said, “Local roads are critical for moving people, providing services, and making sure people get to where they are going reliably and safely. This annual project will help extend the life of these roads and give the public a smoother ride and safer trip.”

A list of the affected streets included in the project can be found on PWSB.net. Residents with questions about the project can call the Santa Barbara County Transportation Division at 681-4990. Drivers should be aware of reduced speed zones and detours when driving through the construction sites. Public Works Department officials thank local residents, pedestrians and the traveling public for their patience and cooperation during this project.

Scrub sealing and microsurfacing is a method for preserving pavement. Small repairs are made before a scrub chip seal made of asphalt and rock chips is applied. Microsurfacing, a mixture of polymer modified asphalt emulsion and sand, is placed on top of the road within a week.
