As part of ongoing efforts to improve pedestrian safety in the Santa Ynez Valley, the California Highway Patrol (CHP), will be conducting an enforcement operation that will focus on traffic safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists on roadways adjacent to local schools.  An enforcement operation will take place on September 5th, at the Santa Ynez Valley Union High School, within Santa Barbara County.

Regrettably, the Santa Ynez Valley has experienced a number of serious traffic collisions in their school zones.  The CHP is committed to preventing these types of collisions and is leading the effort with proactive enforcement and education programs.

The CHP is conducting this public awareness and enforcement program to educate and encourage members of the community to develop and maintain safe practices while driving, walking, and bicycling throughout Santa Barbara County.

CHP officers will conduct enforcement operations within school zones identified as having a high number of traffic related incidents.  Officers will be on the lookout for right-of-way violations, speeding, failing to obey crossing guards, and other common school zone violations.

These enforcement operations are an effective way to communicate pedestrian right-of-way laws to both drivers and pedestrians.  The CHP conducts these enforcement operations in response to community requests and to educate the public on the rules when traveling through a school zone.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
