Construction on the Cabrillo Blvd. bridge was officially completed earlier this week, with a grand opening on Tuesday.

It took almost three years of construction and $26 million dollars. Local leaders celebrated the opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony by Mayor Helene Schneider.

Traffic congestion has been a struggle for motorists at the State Street intersection and entrance to Stearns Wharf, and surrounding businesses took a hit too.

Although, the new bridge is now upgraded to meet all structural and earthquake safety guidelines, as well as improved water flow and flood control into Mission Creek.

Anyone have any good pics of what that area looks like now? If not I guess a sojourn down that way is in order. Being a Noletan I don't get down to the pier as much is I'd like.

Traffic congestion fail: should've put in a right-turn lane from WB Cabrillo onto NB State. Oops, too late. Maybe we get a do-over or three like with Castillo underpass?

First of all there is a creek in the way, so no room for a 3rd WB lane which would add another phase to programming the signals and actually make it worse. This was determined by dozens of traffic counts. When traffic is heavy cutting through the funk zone will bring one back to State at almost exactly the same time. So it's pretty much a lose lose situation. If we still had 2 NB lanes on State it could still work pretty well as it did a few years back... there was the big fail.
